Are AC Delco filters taking a dump?

I'm on another board sometimes and one user noticed a very big down turn in the Duraguard oil filter quality. Anyone else seen it on the newer filters? I"ve got a case of long chevies but they are about a year or so old.
This here page !
It kinda fits I guess since our local paper reported that GM's parts manufacturer Delphi is filing for bankruptsy. Guess even more will be coming from over seas.

More on Delphi

One of AC's suppliers, Champion Labs has changed the design of their filters to what they call an Ecore. AC has adopted this design. It's not necessarily a bad thing, the jury is still out. Plenty of discussion about it on this board.

Here's a link:

That HotRodder guy sounds like a salesman for WIX and Hastings!!!
It's simply laughable the way he is trying to slam down the Motorcraft and Purolator filter elements.

Mark. Why do you choose to get the American news from the America hating Socialist Europeans?

Sounds like he got ahold of a new Ecore. No metal sleeve to protect the filter media? From what? Shorter? Less wasted space. Used to better than Purolator? Likely still is. Made in America, thread end bypass if any, and more media. In the past I have found a PF 1177 had half again more filter area than a Purolator, Hastings, STP, ST, and 3 times that of a Fram. The ST 3950 equivalent is still a conventional design, so I can't say how much media an Ecore has. So the dummy took the AC back and paid more for a Hastings with less media? Moron.

Edit, looked at that thread a little more.Everyone seemed to swallow the story. Nobody checked it out themselves. Nobody recognized the Ecore. Then I followed the Fram link. Less than half of them see a problem with Fram. Really know what they are talking about.

Labman, thats why this is the best automotive forum on the web. Everybody double checks each others outlandish claims. And bless the mods- they keep this from turning into a circus sometimes (something that's sorely missing from most boards in general).

I would too. It has been years since I saw a PF 1177 on anybody's shelf, don't even know if AC still carries them.

Hey! Don't lump me in there too! I was the one that came asking for answers from the pros!!

I guess I was pretty hard on them. And 1977, you didn't take it hook, line, and sinker, but gave us a chance to chortle over it.

I don't think that thread was bashing Champ or the Ecore. With the mention of Delphi's problems, I am not sure anybody there realizes an AC filter could be a Champ Ecore. Without this board, I doubt I would have even noticed the ST 3950 changed from thread end to dome end clicker, or thought it might not be good.

I would think that a fairly popular number like PF 52 would be one of the first to go Ecore. Of course, it is an older number, maybe to be dumped in favor of the PF 47 before too long. On the other hand, are you sure it is a Champ and not a Delphi?

I just bought a PF-46 this weekend. No change since last time that I notice. Same metal inner tube, still says duraguard. I cannot find a country of origin though. Not on the box or on the filter, weird. At least it doesn't say "made in". There is a US address.

Relax, 1977 ..it's just a byproduct of a long standing fued over Champion products. The ecore is a poster child of the bashers and the users. You're just showing up to the show a little late for most of the fun (NOT).

Thank you for bringing this for our review. I'd rather suffer from too many alternative POV ..then too few.

Again Champ or Delphi? The Champ base plates have one larger hole and a letter code,AA, Y, or something on them.

Cut it open after you use it and give us a report.

Sounds like he cut apart am E-core and didn't really look at it. Instead of judging the new design he just starts playing chicken little.

DELPHI does not make filter like he described, Champion does. Complete ignorance.

I have read a lot about the Delphi problems in the news lately. My question is- what is the relationship with AC Delco and the Delphi division? Are they separate or connected? I am a big fan of AC Delco filters-oil and air.

Delphi split from GM years ago. They still supply many of GM parts including SOME oil filters. However the ones you buy from parts stores are made by Champion Labs.

This is my understanding:

AC Delco is part of the the Service Parts Organization of General Motors. Delphi is an independent company spun off of GM a while back. A few years back Delphi was the primary manufacturer of AC oil filters for GM cars, with Champion Labs filling out some of the AC line for non-GM applications. Now both Champ and Delphi are independent suppliers of oil filters to AC Delco. Each supplier uses it's own manufacturing method, but uses media and materials approved by GM.

The manufacturer for a given model number does not seem consistent. I recently bought a few AC PF47 filters from Autozone which were pre-Ecore Champs. About the same time, I ordered a mixed case of filters from a Chevy dealer off of eBay. The PF46 filters were pre-Ecore Champ, and the PF47's were Delphi.

Here's how to tell the difference, at least on a PF 47: If you look into the filter and see a plastic basket, it's an Ecore Champ. If you see a short metal tube leading into a larger metal tube with lots of little holes, it's a pre Ecore Champ. If you see a rubber sleeve extending into a metal tube with fewer, bigger holes, it's Delphi.

From the link in OP:

The newly designed filters are shorter. The filter element is no longer protected by an inner metal sleeve. The welds are exposed. They simply look like a poorly made filter.

AHA!! They are shorter!! Obviously an evil plot to save money. I bet they actually MAKE money of thes filters....E-V-I-L!!

AND....the media is no longer protected? Protected from what exactly?

And of course, the ole it "looks funny".....not like the way it's looked for the last 35 gosh darn years.

Man, just think of the heart attack he would have had if he had opened it up: NO METAL ENDCAPS(hits floor hard....)!!

He probably still thinks they're made by the AC Delco company.....some one give him a dose of BITOG.....
