Guys… Don’t get all excited about forecast models 6-14 days out….

The overall pattern can be predicted accurately to a decent extent… Like 80 to 85 percent of the time that models are pretty accurate in doing that.

But not to an exacting precise degree…

Like forecasting exact low temperatures accurately days 6-14 …. Key word exact or extremely precise. That is not worthy of a ton of confidence.

Will it be cold ?

Yeah I believe so.

But I’m not believing the models can predict exact low or high temperatures days 6-14 out in the future.

Hi BB. I’m the original poster on this thread. The forecast I quoted was the one that the high in Canada would result in freezing temps in Florida in the 2nd week of January. You can read it in posting #1.

This morning, the 9th of January, during the 2nd week of January, 9 days from the date of the forecast, freezing temps have reached Florida, with both Tallahassee and Gainesville at 32 degrees F. In for the win. Better lucky than good?

This might be over soon. Orlando and Phoenix might see temps in the high 30’s this week then it will fall apart. Goodbye to the 2025 Arctic Pipeline!

I will say -- this is why you build with basic insulation and some form of heater just about anywhere in the world.

We were at a resort in Mexico years ago when it was unusually chilly. There's no heater but it would have been nice. Being from CO it wasn't that big a deal but locals were freezing

Overall pattern prediction of the GFS and Euro models is fairly accurate.. Like I have noticed for nearly 20 years… They get the overall pattern right about 80 percent of the time days 6-14 out ahead in time.

32 is not especially super cold in Tallahassee Florida.

Is it cold ?

Yeah sure. No doubt. , but not all that unusual either.

Go back and look up January 2018 … And how cold it got in Florida, southeast Georgia and Southeast South Carolina… And almost 5 inches of snow in Isle of Palm SC…

That… was a really strong cold outbreak.

Or look back at January 1985…

I think Tallahassee got down to 2 degrees F..

Round and round we go. -1c with rain, sleet and snow yesterday. Today it will hit about -25 with a -30 windchill. By Monday we will be mid teens.

Bring the cold on! I haven't turned my furnace on this winter...usually the last two weeks of December and the first two weeks of January are the coldest in Phoenix and I need to turn it on for a few minutes in the morning, but not this year. I can't imagine the stink when I finally need it.

It'll be interesting if I get through the winter without using it.

Fun fact - I hate the gas company. Bill was $50, the only two gas appliances I have are the water heater and furnace. Electric bill was $65. I think I inherited this from my old man, he hated the gas company as well and kept buying all those kerosene heaters that were the rage in the 80's.

I was talking to my wife about this and every year when we approach, say 10F and under (which is quite cold for us, +10 to -12F) there are reports of plumbers being extra busy and of course some vehicle problems.

I maintain 98% of this is just white trash piss poor planning -- and spare me the moaning because I identify as white trash. It's not news that every year we'll see these temps and I NEVER entertain the thought that my pipes will freeze or my vehicles won't start.

If things are built properly and maintained properly, this simply is not an issue. We have the technology.

The exception is unforseen failures, like you're out of town and your furnace just quits. But most of these failures are people just forgetting when it warms and then regretting when it freezes. Rinse and repeat.
