What are your favorite varieties? I try to eat one every day, and I seem to be stuck on red delicious...
 
I'm not a big apple eater, but my wife's favorite is the Pink Lady. Those are a bit harder to find in our area, so she usually falls back to Fuji or Gala.

I suggest going organic with apples, as they are the worst of the "dirty dozen" when it comes to pesticide contamination.

Red Delicious at one time were GREAT, however growers have inbred them so much for beauty, most now are very meally (sp). I now refuse to buy Red Delicous. They may look great on the outside, but not on the inside.

Being from Western New York, (Apple Country), I grew up with apples. My favorate is the Crispin. (at one time called the Mutsu, but I guess it sounded too oriental). The Crispin is a cross between a Golden Delicious and a Fuji. Both great apples in their own right. Living in Florida, I normally buy the Fuji. I also like the Braeburn (sp).
If I want a very cripsy apple, I go for the Empire. I sometimes go for a very old apple from the early days of the US, called the Russett. Looks all brown and rough, but so good. When I'm up in Penfield, I get my apples and cider from Schutts Apple Farm in Webster NY. They normally have 50 different kinds of apples on sale.
 
I love apples there probably my overall favorite food. My favorite types are Fuji, gala and pink lady but i really will just about any type.
 
Wow, thanks guys! There are bunch here that I've never heard of before.

I picked up a few Braeburn at the store today... really good! I also saw Fuji and Gala, so I will try those too.

This Braeburn is way better than the last red delicious I had. I definitely noticed the mealiness.
 
The Red Delicious from local areas like around KC are good. They are usually not waxed and have good texture. We are lucky that we have two major apple growing communities in this area. Waverly and Amazonia MO produde wonderful Johnathan and Red Delicious apples.

Ah, the endless American desire to make all fruit as red as possible. A guy wrote a book called "Epitaph for a Peach" about inheriting an orchard full of peaches full of delicious fruit that were almost unsalable because they were gasp! yellow!

Me: Early fruit would be 'Ginger Gold' and 'Zestar!" Later would be 'Sweet Sixteen' and 'Goldrush'
 
I have two Fuji apple trees and two Gala apple trees at home. There's nothing better than picking them right from the tree and eating them. About the only variety that I purchase in the store is Honeycrisp.

The last two years we've purchased a fair volume of red delicious apples for a limited production run of apple wine. The flavor of locally grown red delicious in season is vastly superior to the red delicious available in the grocery store out of season. It makes some outstanding wine-last year we sold out of our first production run in 11 days (we estimated it would last 3-5 months). This year we've quadrupled the quantity, but we're limited on how much we can produce so we can't make any more than that without sacrificing our grape wines.
