We are way behind the rest of the world in broadband speeds and it shouldn't be that way. Some countires like south korea are currently running fiber optic to individual residences throught the entire country.

She just stuck her fingers in the little holes, thinking they were buttons. You think she might have seen one in a movie or something...

Hmmm... what color was her hair?

She looked at me dumfounded.

I would have moved

I still have a dial up in my condominium. AT&T does NOT offer high speed in my local area. Preposterous in 2011.
I am not out in the sticks - I am surrounded by incredibly rich towns and neighborhoods.

I live with it and go to the library for massive downloads.

I used dial-up internet for as long as I could. It used to be cheaper than broadband. And I considered it safer because I could disconnect the line when not using the internet.

But broadband is cheaper today and the updates are so large you just about have to have broadband just for the software updates. Also if you wan to check out YouTube videos you need broadband.

Back in the days when I was using Apple Computers I was able to buy the updates for software from an independent Apple retailer (not many of those around anymore). I could buy the updates on a CD-R. So I was able to update my comnputer, keep it updated, and still use dial-up internet.

I was still using Juno(Netzero) Dial up until a little over a year ago. Before I moved to where I am now, at the old place the dial up moved pretty quick....nearly dsl speeds...

I had no idea there were still places you could "dial" into. That's amazing. I don't think I've seen a dial-up connection in at least 10 years. Wow.

There are areas, like the one we live in, where DSL is not an option.
A decent dial-up connection is really not bad.
Yeah, DSL is much faster, but our dial-up works just fine, since it's what we can get here.

I took out Netzero for a year...It is a high speed dial up for 10 bucks a month...I had Comcast before for 27 bucks a month and it was a nightmare just like their TV service down here in the jungle...So far [few months now] Netzero has been fine and is not that slow...When the year is up I will look into other options.

I keep a dialup login info file on the laptop just in case DSL goes down or on vacation in the sticks.

Not a bad idea. I have only been on DSL for about 30 days and its been down 3 times already. It was down from about 8 last night until 10 am this morning. Seems like when it goes out a large area is affected because when I call tech support the first thing I get is a recording about the current outtage in my area,, so I just hang up and wait it out.

There is a government push currently for the "New Electrification", helping high speed internet installation move along.

Hopefully it will come to fruition.

Dial up = no freaking way! Heck DSL blows goats! Comcrap is OK as long as the service is good in your area and trust me it is pretty spotty in many areas.

This is my home connection.
