Typically safe mode "should" be able to fix most infestations....due to Windows basically running in "limp mode" - you won't have network access, and only limited device drivers available; basically only for mouse, keyboard, and your monitor at 800x600 resolution
Definitely reconsider getting the PC fixed....even if you do get it cleaned up, it'll make for a good experimental machine, perhaps to play with a *NIX distribution, such as Ubuntu with
But yea, I haven't found anything that can get past Malware Bytes, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D....I also keep a good arsenal of "last resort" 'online virus scans' at hand.....just as a second review to be "really sure" the virus/rootkits are gone....
Almost all of the major antivirus companies have free "online" virus scanners......works great, cause I'm sort of a tweak freak, I personally don't use ANY antivirus.....but I do periodically "check up" on my PC every now and then if it seems sluggish, etc...
