I used to sit in my Jeep with the ac or heater on during lunch. Not doing that any more. Gas is around $7 here

I found it idiotic how fast people drove before gas spiked.
I find it dumber now. Supposed value of time in the car or not… speed and power are a cubic relation.
Apparently gas isn’t really expensive because I don’t see people slowing down. An I’m not talking doing 40 on the interstate…. But 80+ in a 65 is a bit much, regardless of how good of drivers folks think they are and how entitled they think they are to do so.

Starting at about 2006 I was already assuming that gas can go $6 / gal and oil can go $140 / barrel. All the cars I've bought since then were reasonably good in mpg. 28-40mpg between 2 cars.
Refusing to go to the office is what I'm doing now, good to have a boss not in the same office.
Still buy takeout, in general food price / take out price has gone up about 20% based on my observation. The biggest impact to us is stock price reduction and we got a haircut on our portfolio, and pay only went up 3.5% this year. Should have switched job last year instead of waiting for all the stock vest completed, many I knew got a 25%-50% increase from last year's job hop. Can't predict the future and can't win them all.

Without going political. When you print 80% of the money in 2 years alone, anything less than 4x price increase is actually a bargain.
So people who can borrow for that low interest rate would just buy up everything and sit on it till inflation catch up, and eventually it will. It is the people who cannot borrow at 0% that lose out.
The opposite can be said: when you are on the street homeless and sick at 70, would you regret not saving and plan earlier in life so you would have less to worry.
Of course, the best would be somewhere in the middle between your and my example.

I come home every day for lunch, but I have thought about cutting that luxury out for now because my truck loves to drink the gas. The sad part is that it's not only gas, the grocery bill has also gone up significantly. We're boring and predictable in that department, nothing really changes when it comes to grocery shopping, except the price at checkout.
We haven't really started cutting back, but my wife and I have had a discussion about the state of things. We still plan on taking our vacation and enjoying life while being mindful of the situation though.
We are in a very fortunate position to be able to weather this storm, we have no debt other than monthly utilities, but we still want to preserve what we have by being mindful of the situation the country is facing right now. I really feel bad for those who are living week to week at this point.

Nope. Life is too short. Didn’t 2020 teach us that? If I can afford it, I don’t worry about it.
Well combining errands would be one way. Max speed of 55 or 60 another. Working from home as many days as you can per week. Having more stuff delivered vs going out shopping.

We don't drive enough to really be impacted by gas prices. I work from home, wife works about 2 miles from home, and the kids go to school about 1 mile from home. Most of our friends and family are within 10 miles of us or less. We are still below $5/gallon here in the Omaha area. I usually just put in $20 once a week or so and that's enough to get us everywhere we want to go.

But us diesel drivers get it worse. Look at the price of diesel, higher fuel economy or not.
Delivery costs have energy costs built in somehow.
And on top of buying diesel fuel a subset also need to buy DEF. About $15 for 2.5 gallon jug.
Used to be cheaper. Got to enjoy the double whammy back in the day, cheaper to buy, and got more for your money. Now it sure seems like time to move on, I don't see myself getting another diesel, despite liking them.
About how long will that last? Perhaps a better question might be what's the percentage of DEF per gallon of fuel?

Currently in Northen Illinois currently the majority of non-interstate gas stations are selling diesel for less than unleaded. Not sure if it is tax related or a local oversupply in diesel, or something else.......
I haven't really changed anything, the wife and I have always been frugal.
