Anyone own a newer BMW M2?

I was actively searching for a fully optioned F87 M2C manual without a hole in the roof until I turned to the Dark Side and bought my C43 sedan. I'm completely underwhelmed by the current G87; the Lego/Minecraft design language and the tacked-on digital touchscreen display (which hides most useful functions in various submenus) are major shortcomings. Performance is essentially equal to the F87. Did I mention it weighs 193 pounds more than an F87?
And it only weighs 123 less than my C43.

Glad to see this topic come up, because I was just on the BMW site last night checking out the 230i. 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds is fast enough for my needs, and I love the fact that you can order one without a sunroof.

If it were me, I'd shoot for the 2018MY, which got the LCI facelift, but retained the original N55 engine of the 2016-17.

2019MY brought the M2C, with the detuned S55 from the M3, but as a practical matter, I'd be willing to give up the 40bhp and additional complexity for only incremental performance increase. 365bhp is plenty. But that's me, and the bench race isn't a concern.

BMW M2. Impressions? Input? Thoughts?
What is newer? F87 or G87? I would absolutely go F87.
Big thing: S55 engine has an issue with crank hub, and it is $2,500-2,800 job with upgraded part. IMO, absolute riot of a car, especially with manual.
You could go N55 M2, the first version with 360hp. It is upgraded N55, with dual oil supply lines etc.
G87 is IMO big, still fun, but big. The best thing is the engine, S58. But there is too much weight.

I've owned all three versions of the F87 M2, I recommend the Comp as the best overall dollar value. The CS is awesome if you don't mind spending for it and it will hold its value the best. The N55 (OG) sounds the best. Happy to answer any questions.

The crank hub thing mainly was a scare tactic put on by aftermarket companies in the US. The S55 is a very solid engine, and if you aren't turning up the power a good deal and drag racing, it's not a worry. 'Ring junkies drive the hell out of them and laugh at this whole crank hub thing whenever an American brings it up.

S55's were used in many different racing platforms from GT4 M4's and M2 CS Racing models and were/are considered very reliable.

True. I suppose to add tune thing into it.

It's more the wife's car, and it's not THAT big. Heavy? A bit, but again, not buying to race, just nice and sporty. We will see.

Used market = ugly around here.
I also have a fair amount of seat time in the new one. You do notice the weight increase, but it's all relative. If you have no previous M2 experience, then it will likely seem fine. And no, the car doesn't feel that big, especially relative to most vehicles these days. The S58 engine is fantastic, though, and while I hate to say it, the ZF 8-spd is a better match than the manual.

We have a 230i. It's fun to drive around town. I hate the dash w/screen.

It's not a large car. Definitely a sub-compact.

Agree. It's not the crank hub you have to worry about but the intake valves getting a wash from a slowly leaking water/air intercooler. hehe.

I would absolutely take an F82 M4 GTS with the Bosch water injection system.

On an aside what did you think about the side skirts on the G87 with regards to egress/ingress? My wife an I constantly hit them with the sole of our shoes

I have yet to spend enough time with the G87 for daily driving, but I could see with how far they protrude being a problem.

I’m thinking about leasing a 2025 M2 with auto transmission.

Are these cars reliable with just oil changes for lease term ?
