Anyone here had a bad hip replaced?

That doctor is a complete fool in my strong opinion…

You had a severe accident… Which now has caused your hip to be bone on bone at times. It clearly is affecting your quality of life…

Hell Bo Jackson has major hip surgery.. And his was like a car accident except it was from a crazy football injury.

Find another physician.. . Also.. get the skinny if ANY of this potential ortho doctors in your area have ANY issues with post operative infections… HUGE reason why I say that.

How would a person get that info about post op infections ?

Well, it might only last 30 years but that is 30 pain free year compare to what? 20 years of pain before he can get the surgery?

A buddy had his done in Phoenix. He claimed it was $10,000 US all in. Sounds too cheap because another friend had a knee done for $25,000.
I was talking to an Indian friend of mine and he mentioned taking his father to India for some surgery. It was almost comical the way he described it. He said you get a catalog of replacement parts and their cost. Like replacement knees and the catalog has good, better, and best choices and commensurate prices. You pick out your knee and order it and bring it with you to the hospital where you've pre-negotiated the price for the replacement.

Post operative infection of any implant is very bad. Not bad, very bad.

Can be a facility issue too. Ask about the facility's post op infection rates. Post op infections can almost be eliminated.

Doc is saying replacement hip only lasts 30 years before needing to be replaced so right now is ill advisable

I'd find a new Doc. He sounds like an idiot to me.

You're bone-on-bone, and he wants you to suffer for who knows how long, until he thinks a new hip will last through the rest of your life. None of us is guaranteed tomorrow, so it just might last the rest of your life.

You're suffering, and that's no kind of life RIGHT NOW. Everyone I know who has had a hip replacement, couldn't be happier.

I'd find an excellent, competent Doc with great reviews, have it replaced, and enjoy the next 30 years. If it needs to be replaced 30 years down the road, at least you got 30 good years because you weren't suffering needlessly.

I never got to speak to the surgeon, just the doc that works under him. The surgeon might have a another opinion.

I'm 37 years old but 5 years ago I got struck by a car while crossing the street and ended up busted up pretty badly.

Fast forward 3 years, I had already settled the case with the drivers insurance and I started a new job where I would be on my feet all day. In the last 2 years I've had a lot of left hip/back and right ankle pain. I finally said enough is enough and got my pcp to send me to an ortho. What we found out so far is my left hip is basically bone of bone most of the time (moderate to severe cartilage loss/osteoarthritis) and my back is strained pretty much constantly for some reason. I just had an MRI done on my right ankle after xrays showed nothing and inserts did nothing.

I'm doing PT for my hip and it doesn't seem to be working. The PT said the muscles around my left hip and tight and tensed up quite a bit but didn't really explain why. They just massage them for about 10 minutes and put a hot compress on them.

If all of this stuff doesn't work I'm going to need a new hip between now and 20 years years from now.

Anyone who isn't in their 60s dealt with this before? 20 years of hip pain seems a bit unbearable to me.
My younger brother did and it’s been an amazing recovery. Golf soccer biking

Well.. being that I have inside information…

That’s easy for me. Having said that… If by chance someone knows the local infectious disease physician… And they were possibly willing to give someone a heads up… That would be extremely helpful to someone who is going in blind.

I will say that what I’ve seen and heard and witnessed.. It was 2 particular ortho physicians who routinely had post operative infections infections.

One evening the infectious disease physician said out loud, “it’s the same darn two people who keep having this trouble.” And I told him, yeah, I have noticed that as well. And he said, “ so you are seeing this too huh ?”. and I told him yes sir… Absolutely.

Being that the circumstances…. In my circumstance it was the two doctors. Not the facility. We had numerous other physicians who performed surgeries at our facility. No others ever had trouble routinely like those two.

Few would have a good hip replaced!!

I am 70 years old. Prior to surgeries, both hips were Arthritic. I was way disabled and caring for a sick wife.
During 2023 the following
July left hip replaced
August left eye cataract surgery
November wife of 42 years passed at home
December right hip replaced - coming home to an empty house with a new hip after 4 days confinement Sucked Big Time!

The first two weeks at home sucked, having help would have sucked less.
I was not allowed to drive for 6 weeks.
There are months of PT.
PT, much of it anyway hurt like all hell. You must do the work to get the benefit.

If I got through the ordeals at my age, you can certainly make it.
By three weeks post surgery I was in much less pain than with the original hip(s).

In your case would I wait 20 years for a new hip? Hell No.
Find a different ortho doc.
Have the surgery.
If you wear out the first replacement in 30 years? So what, go again.

Luck!

I suppose if the goal is just to have the maximum chance of living to 85, then only having one instead of two major surgeries is best...
But I would get in done now, do your PT and enjoy middle age, I would hope in 30 years the tech and risks for surgery would be much lower!
My FIL had his done at 82, then again at ~92, as it was coming apart, but he keeps himself lean and mean, and now he's 100.

Great just got my MRI results back for my right ankle - Osteoarthritis in two joints around the ankle. Surgery needed in the future.

On Oct 1st, 1998, I was t-boned by a car driver on my motorcycle at age 24.
The femur ball on my left hip was 100% separated from the femur neck.
I was patched back up in the emergency room using 3 very long bolts, and shipped out the door 4 days later.

That lasted 9 years, until the pain of walking became unbearable.
Not to mention other activities that young people tend to engage in in their lives.

Had full hip replacement in March of 2009.
That hip has been pain free ever since.
I'm 50 currently. 51 in September.

The only advice I can give you is to get the surgery sooner rather than later.
It will take about 3 months to realize that you hip is no longer the source of your pain, and when you reflect back, you will realize that it wasn't the hip hurting at all for all those months of PT, either.

Get the surgery.
Don't wait.

Even though replacement hip, knees, shoulders, and ankles are actually common operations now, absolutely make sure you go to an extremely good physician to have it done. My wife has had both knees replaced and everything is absolutely fine and doesn’t even think about them. She worked in a hospital for many many years, but would most definitely never have the operation done where she worked. I repeat, she would not have the operation done at the hospital she worked at. I don’t know where you live, but go to the best possible physician to have it done. My wife had both operations done at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. And do extensive research on the doctor you are considering for the operation. Many doctors can do it, but not many are absolute experts at it. Just my two cents and good luck. I hope it all works out well for you and it’s a “positive” life-changing event for you.

Yes, I’ve gone to the county clerk website to look up certain doctors names and I see malpractice lawsuits.

My mom had a hip replacement about 12 years ago, Dr cut a major nerve and she now has to use a walker for life. Had her knee done last year and they found out there was not enough tissue but went ahead with the procedure, then had to re do the same knee 6 months later. 2nd time had major infection. Everything about Richmond Va is awful, especially surgeons. Do lots of research about the specific Dr before allowibg him to cut you.

Postpone it as long as you can . Not all operations are successful and you won't be the same after it.
