if you look at the people making a huge stink about gay marriage, it's the conservatives. a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage? hell, let's ban interracial marriage while we're at it. what business is it of the government who someone marries?

I find it amusing, as well as frightening, that the party which claims to want less government intrusion into our lives wants to tell people how to live, and wants to spy on us.
And why does evrytbody bring up Clinton or Gore? Why always say, " We're doing better thanthey would". What a crock, sounds 3rd grade.

I don't like Bush much. The only small thing I can say good about him is that he's probably better than what the other party has to offer. And that's not saying much.

The whole situation makes me sad. What happened to people who wanted less governement? Why are there none left?

Fiscal/Monetary issues;

Dems don't trust us with our money and feel they need to handle it for us. Repubs feel we can decide better what to do with the cashola.

Social/Privacy issues;

Repubs don't trust us in our private lives and Dems don't care what we do with our private lives.

Very basic summarization but I think this about nails it for me. Anyone else agree or disagree?

Sounds basically correct, I guess.
What about environmental issues?
Republicans seem to care only for what they get out of it, while spouting off about economics and freedom.
However, it was T. Roosevelt who initiated the National Parks, and the EPA was started under Nixon's administration.

This is mostly spot on. Notice the disturbing similarity though. Each party is convinced they know what's best for us, "the little people" and will do all they can to use the force of law to make sure that's what we get...

At least the Dems are honest enough to directly tax us for their programs. The current batch of Rebublicans believe in big deficit spending so our children will get the bill.

That's not necessarily wrong. It depends on whether our children are the primary recipients of the benefits.

But I agree that in most cases, those who increase spending should have the guts to increase taxes.

Right on, Tweeker. I find that "conservatives" often focus on trivial things, like trying to limit the rights that gay people should have (how dare he LOVE him or she LOVE her, Jesus would never stand for that), while greed, indifference, pride, idolatry and other deadly sins march on. It's like plugging the pinholes while water is pouring in an open hatch!

I'm not Gay, but I think they're pretty much average people who have different needs than I do. As long as they work hard and pay their taxes I don't give a hoot in hell what they do on their own time.

I think the reason we'll never have real change in this country is that politicians go after the easy targets instead of the root causes of problems. Likewise, we won't have a really good President again because truly qualified applicants are smart enough to avoid such duty. Back in the day the President had some room to maneuver (took awhile for a horse and rider to get the news out). Now they are covered 24/7/365, how could anybody live/work like that?

Call me crazy but what about decreasing both?

MarkC....good point. I think it is safe to say that both the Dem and Repub party have undergone some change from their historical ideology.

Isn't letting the current generation make these decisions for the next generation very similar to letting Government make these decisions for the current generation in the first instance ?

In either case, the person who pays has no say in how their money is spent.

I agree. Seeing as ALL the democratic pretenders have proposed budget deficit increases (refer to the link I posted earlier in this thread), most with tax increases that will put less money in your pocket, I will pencil you in as a Bush voter

When did the recession start???

Mr. Bush's opponents, on the other hand, have fired back that the substantial job losses of the recession have occurred while Mr. Bush has been president

Well.........DUH!!!

That's what ALWAYS happens AFTER a recession.

Like I said yesterday....it ain't Bush's recession, but Clinton's

I've been Bush bashing lately but I think over all he is a decent guy. I think some of my biggest frustrations lately have been more with Sean Hannity then Bush. I get wrapped up listening to a guy that just can't be objective. So recently, I put on Bill O'reilly's radio station, which I just discovered. Now there is someone who calls it like it is! I like Bill and think he does an excellent job. I don't agree with everything Bush has done, but you have to ask yourself if there ever will be a canidate that will? No.

I agree with what Buster says about Sean Hannity AND Colmes-I get tired of listening to both of them and I usually watch FOX News, O'Reilly, and Greta. FOX seems somewhat rightwing but I became very discouraged listening to CNN and CBS. When I discovered that I had been mislead by CBS and CNN I had no further use for them.

I also try to get information from people who have actually been someplace where news is actually taking place. For example, the husband of the woman who cuts my hair is in Iraq. He came home recently on leave and then returned to Iraq. The woman who cuts my hair says that some of the soldiers over there are very unhappy with the media coverage of that war. She told me that her husband told her that he is bored to death and that a totally wrong image is being shown by the news media. Inspite of the occasional roadside bomb or car bombing, it is actually pretty peaceful. All the good things get ignored by the media. It might seem tough to the news media, because the news media is deliberately being targeted so that it appears that everything is really bad. When your hotel is regularly being shot up, you think things are tough.

I hope that people understand that what I meant in my post above is that a political party needs to be focused on major issues. And the two biggest issues I can think of are foreign affairs (in this time of terrorism), and the economy. There are other issues, of course. I get tired of Democratic leadership that seems to focus on petty stuff and not the important stuff.

Did you know that John Kennedy cut taxes? Did you know that he was forceful in confronting the Russians in the Cuban Missle Crisis? Did you know that he started to send American forces to Vietnam, rightly or wrongly? How does the actions of John Kennedy differ so much from George Bush? I get tired of all of this silly hatred directed at Bush, the goofball comparisons with him and Hitler, etc. And anybody who compares Bush to Hitler has no apparent gasp of history.

Under Bush, we took down the al Qaeda stronghold in Afganistan. Under Clinton, we fired a few cruise missles at al Qaeda bases in Afganistan. There are times you have to do something to defend your country, and you can't wait for the UN to give its approval.

Now Bush is no Lincoln. And I certainly don't agree with him on everything. But I agreed with Clinton less.

When I look at what kind of candidates the Democratic Party is offering to the American people, I am sad. There must be someone better. I would prefer to vote Democratic-I am a registered Democrat. I was one of those people inspired by John Kennedy. My brother was inspired and did more then me-he served in the Peace Corps. I fear the loss of the two party system in this country-I really do not know how the Democratic Party is going to survive much longer.

mystic:

kennedy did cut taxes; but it was more demand-side than supply-side. he cut the highest bracket (it was like 90% over $400K) to 70%, but the bulk of the tax cuts were directed at people with much lower percentages of disposable income. the bush tax cuts have been mostly illusory to me. my paycheck literally went up just pennies per day. by the time you throw in all the other taxes and fees that have gone up, i'm actually worse off than i was before.

clinton did miss bin laden by around an hour or so. this was vocally called out by republicans as an act of "wag the dog" to distract the american public from his bj / cigar / dress mess. clinton tripled the amount of money spent on counter terrorism after the first wtc bombing. the problem is intelligence. ours is historically weak in these regions, and doesn't appear to be getting any better. the clinton and bush administrations were both horribly wrong on the whole wmd thing. even worse, if they were right, then recent actions have simply scattered these weapons into unknown hands.

on the other hand, there are less than 10,000 american troops in afghanistan, and obl is still free. the taliban and al qaida are regrouping and there are travel advisories outside of kabul.

i have two cousins in baghdad , separated by about 5 miles lovingly named "sniper's alley." to the best of my knowledge they have yet to see each other because it's too dangerous to cross town.

One of the reasons our intelligence is so bad in the Middle East is the terrible shortage of people who can speak Arabic or Persian. And judging from some recent events, we can't trust a lot of the people we DO HAVE who can speak Arabic or Persian.

You never know where a trouble spot may develop. If the CIA was trully capable they would have experts on every area of the world, and at least a few people available for many of the languages of the world. LANGUAGE is one of the biggest problems. And who is telling you this-a guy who speaks only English for all practical purposes. I know a few words from some other languages.

In America, once you get past English, Spanish, European languages, Russian, and Chinese and Japanese, you are going to start seeing the shortage of interpreters.

Most people I have met from Europe typically speak three or four languages. One of the few exceptions was the German couple who were in America because their daughter had married an American and they toured my house that was still under construction. They did not know much in the way of English and I didn't know much in the way of German, so you can imagine how that conversation went. They knew a little more English however then I knew German.

hell, let's ban interracial marriage while we're at it. what business is it of the government who someone marries?

It is my business as I am a tax payer and American citizen. I could care less if someone has a "play" marriage. But the moment you implicate social funding it becomes my de facto business.

But i **** well will oppose queers demanding goverment benefits from an illegitimate social status of marriage.

It is about reckognizing a family unit to me. Two people can do whatever they want together...but I will not extend any legal benefits to them.
