If the OP is willing to homebrew coolant, I bet he's willing to rig a t-stat to a hot plate as well

I use water from the creek out back . It never freezes.

Hey I meant to update this. I ended up getting some weird sandy junk building up in the jar after a couple months. I scrapped it and never pursued it any further.
