My local WalMart has Everstart batteries, and I quote: "Distributed by Johnson Control, Inc., Milwaukee, Wisconsin." (Might be wrong about Milwaukee.)

Now.. does this mean said batteries are MADE by JCI?

Wal-Mart, East Weymouth (right next to Stop and Shop,) Middle St, Massachusetts. I can provide pics.

Of course, I have a Johnson Control battery from Advance (Gold series, I know they all are by Johnson Control,) but this info could be useful for someone else.. ?

Yes. I have an EverStart Maxx in our Acura and it's "distributed" by JCI. That means that JCI actually makes it. There are relatively few automotive battery manufacturers. Far fewer than there are brands available.

I've used the yellow "Neverstarts" for years and they have given good service. Wally's battery department selection differs depending upon whether they are a "super Walmart with a tire and repair shop or just a regular one. Prices are not dropping.

I just had one of those die on me, at just under three years of service. I got a full warranty replacement. I guess, they can be so bad that they're good!

Yap, the black ones say distributed by indeed. Not sure what it means. Made in China?
I don't have a yellow one anymore to compare (failed recently and I got a prorated black replacement).
They don't seem to be good deals anymore.

Ive had two go bad. Jut start draining and sitting at low voltage, like a soft internal short.

Id go with an AAP silver with coupon.

The Everstart batteries have gone up in price because there were too many people bring their old battery back right before the warranty expired and demanded a new one. It's one of the reasons that the price of batteries has gone up everywhere. Most WM stores now have a computerized battery tester and the decision to give you a new battery under warranty is now decided on what the computer printout says. I got a new battery from them about 6 months ago, but I had to wait about 90 minutes for the computer to tell them that my battery was bad.

I guess you can program one of those to say about anything...:) but perhaps it prevents injuries due to not being careful hoking up a standard load tester.

Yup, my local store has JCI batteries.

But, Advance with discount code will be your best bargain, most likely. I've bought two batteries that way and that was the best deal I could find.

AAP, with the $40 off $100 code, and the recent $15 rebate on Silver batteries, CRUSHES WM on price! And they do still have (AFAIK) a pro-rated warranty, WM only has a replacement warranty.

The main reason for battery prices today,is the cost of lead.Which nobody is immune to.The days of Wal Mart batteries being $69.95/$79.95 is over. And all warranties are going to 1,2,3,4 year free replacements. No more pro rates. This is industry wide. And there is an industry....BCI...Battery Council Institute.

I wish I'd have known about Advance's online coupon system. We (my rommmate and I) paid the FULL $134.99 on that Autocraft GOLD battery.. the big huge one with the ghetto battery hold down (that is still on it.)

Coulda saved $50 but it was too late.. Oh well, we got one for at LEAST three years now.. We are good with that. And it's Johnson Controls... just like Interstate...

Walmart had to jump my car to get it from the parking lot into the service bay and dispensed with testing it.

I bought battery for my E430 from a Ford dealer, it has 3 years replacement and 100 months pro-rated. Cost was around $100 for big size 49.

Walmart tends to overshoot certain commodity price run ups. When ground beef goes up 25c a pound they go up 75c then all the shoppers grumble about "the debt ceiling" or wherever they'd like to assign blame. IOW WM is not an end-all be-all cheapo store for everything under one roof.

That said I liked their relaxed policy of "if you don't have a receipt, we'll go off the battery date code." Helped me with a 2nd hand battery that died before its time. A good way to build brand equity-- well now they are cashing in on that very equity with stiffer meaner policies. And so goes the world...

Go talk to the manager if it bugs you that bad, worst that can happen is he'll say no. Maybe he'll let you buy another one online then return the first one (category: customer satisfaction) if you still have its receipt.

If you don't ask, the answer is definitely no.

And I'm confident someone peeped into (one of your) your running thread about the coupons.

I hear you, eljef.. And I think this was when the Coolant Temp Sensor was first acting up, and I thought it was the failing, sulphated (?) Bosch battery with that funky strap tie-down. But I think at this point it is a situation like with MA law, we had a week or so to get an independent inspection performed on V, and never did..

I like to put the battery purchased on the CTEK every month or so. Does that really help the battery? It almost never needs much charging.. Yoru thoughts as to the battery health?

While the price of lead has gone up, it doesn't explain the 100% increase (or more) in the price of a battery the last couple of years. If the cost of lead has skyrocketed that much, the price of the core would have gone up also. The price of the core, at least in my area, is $10, although I heard a local salvage man was paying $12 temporarily. That's the same price of a core 5 years ago when the price of a new battery was about half of what it is now. I'm sure a lot of other things have increased the battery also, including regulations, shipping and employee costs.
The fact that most are no longer pro-rating proves that the biggest cost is the warranty, and the rate of somebody trying to get a free battery exchange from their perfectly good battery is high.

It's true.. Advance Auto SILVER (a very very good battery.. not sure why I got the "Gold," both JCI) was about $79 in 2009. I distinctly remember buying 2, for 2 cars I had. Free 2-year replacement.

It is triple digits now, "on the shelf" price before sales..............................
