Hey all, been awhile since I posted but me and my wife are again thinking of trading in her dart. Last time we thought about getting a 2015 Mazda cx 5 bUT our financial situation prevented us from going through with it. Anyhow everything is good now money wise and I started my search for her a smallish suv again. Went to look at a 2016.5 cx5 grand touring and loved it just like we did before. During the test drive we drove past the nissan dealer and I saw the beautiful nissan rouge sl. My salesmen tells me that the nissan, Mazda, and the Hyundai dealerships are owned by the same person and that he could sell me either brand. We drove the rouge and we like the nissan over the Mazda, are there any reasons not to buy the nissan? How the reliability of them? Any pros and cons about the cvt? How's the oci interval on them? Thanks

I Traded in my 13 Dart last month for a Veloster Turbo at the Hyundai Dealer.
I drove a Tuscon there, I liked it, I wasn't looking for a crossover/suv either.
I have drove the Mazda 2015 CX5 as well, never the Nissan.
Have you checked out the Crosstrek? AWD may be beneficial, ive driven through Louisiana in floods.

how was the tuscon. Ive seen them and i like the looks. I can get a nissan rouge sl for 28925, a tuscon limited for 29xxx and the mazda cx 5 gt for 29xxx so there all in the same price range but they all have things that make me nervous about buying. Nissan con for me is the cvt as ive never owned one so i dont know about the reliability. Mazda con is that i dont know anyone with a mazda so i dont know of the down the road quality. Hyundai tucson con is the 7 speed dct trans, ive never owned a dct trans and again idk aboit the reliability

If you're used to hearing and feeling a transmission shift, it will drive you bonkers.

Nissan has had issues with the Jatco CVT's in the past that were all over in the auto press. First Nissan tried to blame customers for the issues, but that didn't work well, so they started leaning on the manufacturer.

First person I've ever heard who prefers an X-Trail (Rogue) over a CX5, but each to their own! If you like the Nissan, go for it. I assume they have 3 years warranty over there, and maybe you could buy an extra 2 or 3 years extended warranty on top of that, then not have the worry about CVT issues?

That never bothered me at all. I have had several and prefer them.
I never understood the big ordeal about them. Plus in hilly country they never bog down.

I shopped all of them late last year for my wife and nearly pulled the trigger on the CX-5 but opted for the 2016 Ford Escape instead (mainly because Ford had much better incentives).

She (we) have not been disappointed at all with over 8K trouble free miles on the Escape.

Of the two you mention, I would get the Mazda for reliability reasons.

PS: The 2017 refresh (new grill) improves the looks of the Escape.

I don't know about the Rogue in particular but Nissan in general has gone down hill since their marriage to Renault....head gasket issues, CVT issues, etc....

Well, my Nissan CVT experience in 2010-2011 was a disaster. New car and all... CVT had problems. Got a new '13 Corolla with the 4 speed auto.... Problem solved.

And now even the venerable Corolla won't come with a true auto transmission after 2016. Only the CVT. Toyota worked hard and they finally found a way to insert complexity and unreliability into the bullet proof Corolla. Well done Toyota. The mantra of "down with maintainability!" Will certainly pay off.

The Toyota automatic in the Corolla was an excellent unit, definitely one of the best on the market in that size car. Tossing that out is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater, bad move.

Any reasons? Well....

1. It's ugly
2. That CVT will likely cost you
3. Nissan electric-boost steering sucks
4. Car & Driver gave it 3 stars out of 5 and ranked it behind 11 other small SUVs
5. You already have a 2 year old car
6. The combination of depreciation on your trade will set you back thousands

If you're determined to trade in your 2 year old car, at a big loss, for a compact SUV, then please shop Ford Escape, Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V.

This! We've owned 2 Nissans since the Renault venture and they were both total garbage! Run from any Nissan assembled in Mexico with the Renault engine!

This coming from this esteemed member should carry some weight.

Is this your wife's ride? If so let her decide, period. Especially if you trade every 2 or 3 years. We shopped all the cute utes, wife hated the CVT, ended up with a RAV. Happy wife, RAV doing fine. Toyota made some updates with the '16 RAV - did you look at them?

Try backing it up, the goofy camera thing is ok for finding the back of your garage, but my Mom found she couldn't see other cars coming or people walking when backing out of a spot in a parking lot. They have a Forester now, not as slick looking but its more functional and better engineered IMO.

Forgot to mention the RAV4 as an alternative. I've rented the RAV. It's a good small SUV.

Look, if this is for your wife, and she wants this thing...your only viable solution is to find something that she likes better...

Man I only paid 21 for my rogue. Wife paid 22 for her forester.
28K is too much Robert Dinero.

Wife gets 31+ MPG average on a MT subie, I only get 23.5 soft peddling the Rogue. I would look at the RAV and the Mazda, I think the Ravs are built in Canada now and they HAD a shifty AT; are they going to CVT also? I will say my rogue fells MUCH more refined than the Subie as far as ride goes, but the E-PS is too heavy and the CVT and be a fuel hog but uis pleasant otherwise - I hear tell Subi does a great job on the CVT engine marriage.

I didn't know that Nissan was in the makeup business; but hey if they are and you want to try some rouge, then by all means go for it.

Now I hear their Rogue is a decent vehicle.
