Any harm using an FL400S on a Toyota?

I have a scion tC, and yesterday I slapped a motorcraft FL400S on my engine rather then the dinky 4967.

Should I have gone with the stock 4967? the slightly larger 3614? or am I good with the 3600/FL400S?

The gasket fit fine, theres no leaks, noticking and my car seems to be fine. And I got like 3/4's of a quart of oil extra in my car now with the larger FL-400S.

Should I worry?

My personal opinion is I would not worry.

Great thing to do. The new FL-2005 should also fit except that the gasket is a bit thinner.

I go with a Wix 51396/Napa Gold 1396 on my Toyota 1.8L.

Don't worry.
I'm using the FL400s on 1.8L corollas and 4.7L Sequioa/Tundras.
I've also used it on older Nissans.

I used a few FL-400S filters on my 1.8L Corolla engine. I became nervous when it took excessively long for the oil light to go out several times during startup. Apparently, the anti-drainback valve wasn't working, and it takes a lot of oil to fill up that filter.

Maybe my experience was a fluke, but it gave me cold feet. I have been using the SuperTech ST-3614 ever since without any problems.

If you still are under warrenty I would be worried.

It's toytoas motor till 60k or 5 years. If something happened to it and they saw a non-spec'd filter on it, I'd say you would have a problem or two.

And I've heard others state that they would slap on a OEM filter before it was taken into the shop..

Let's see, Engine dies or is making major noise and look, a shiny new filter is on the engine. The Service Manager will have fun with that one... You'd have to show them the receipts for every oil change which would incl the proper oil and filter.

If your engine needed a larger oil capacity, Toyota would have put a larger pan in!

But, I'm the safe one.. But I did get Ford to do a $1200 head Job @ 62k miles for free. And the orginal warrenty ran out at 36k.

Because I'm a nice guy? No, Because I showed them with receipts and UOA that they had a engine that had a problem and should not cough head gaskets @ 62k. They finally agreed after seeing all the papers with the correct OCI and parts.

(We will not talk about the same engine coughing another set 40k later...

.. And Ford said thats too bad.. First set was on us.. 2nd and any others is YOUR problem..)

use them if it fits, it's just a little bigger so it also holds a little bit more oil which is good. Have been using the same filter on my Geo Metro's/Suzuki Swift's for the last 5or6 years now and they work just fine along with holding 1/4qt more oil with each oil change. They better keep working being I got such a stock pile of them after Wal-Mart's dropping them from their shelfs only to start selling them again-at a higher price $3.28ea now they were $2.77 when I bought all of mine-only got about 50 or so left.

Just a fun fact, the stock filter on your tC is the same as the one that's spec'd for my lawn mower. Admittedly it's got a 48" deck, 14 hp, and 5 speeds, but still. I say go with a bigger filter of some kind, I wouldn't feel comfortable going past 3K every with a filter like the stock one.

I wouldn't worry using either filter. The dinky ones don't appear to get loaded in 5k of usage in my experience ..but bigger is almost always better in filtration.

I have been using the FL400s in my Toyota 3.4 for the past two changes. Good filter, The ADBV sems to work well(this engine has the filter mounted nearly at 45° with the threads down. My oil pressure is instant after two week sits in the garage.
I also like the Toyota filters alot but as a matter of conveniance the Motorcraft ones are easier and usually cheaper to get with the beneifits of being larger and a good quality media.

I'm not really worried about Warranty and my oil filter. They can't really blame the oil filter unless it was directly involved in whatever broke in my engine.

They would be more worried about the other stuff...my header, intake, headerback exhaust...

The FL-400S has a 3/4-16 thread.
Alot of Japanese engines use the 20x1.5mm thread.
I would be sure that your engine uses the 3/4-16 thread on the filter mounting stud.
The two thread forms are very close to each other but they are not exactly the same.

the size difference between a 3614 and a FL400s is about 1/4qt of oil more. I've seen the size of the stock 4967 which is a little bit smaller that the 3614 -- 3/4qt difference???? 1/2qt at the most maybe but every little bit more oil is a plus++++!!!! My Swift holds 3.5qt with the stock 3614 and 3.75qt with a FL400s on it.

set it on the table and fill it up...thump it a bit on the table and come back every 5 minutes and you'll see the oil is being absorbed into the media...do that for about 15 minutes while your car is draining. You'll get close to 3/4ths of a quart.

can't be, being the FL400s only holds 1/2qt of oil total. just went to the shed and took a empty FL400s filter 'can'-filter cut open at seam lip - NO filter element in it- and it held 1/2qt and that's it!! put the element in it and you'd be lucky-maybe under pressure to get the 1/2qt in it! The 3614 held 1/4qt and that's it!
