So I have this iphone for ~5 years and today I started getting an error for passcode.

Now phone is getting locked and I tried to restore using itunes and having no luck either. itunes gives an error that it can't restore it.

Does anyone has a trick for it?

Sounds like you did a secure reset ...and now it has the passcode enabled. If you have your apple ID you should be able to do another reset and then a restore. If you last backed up like 4 years ago ...there may be version issues. It should all be based on apple ID though.

I have the apple ID and everything, but for some reason itunes isn't 'restoring' it.

On the iphone itself, it's locked and says can't be used until 1 hr. I tried this:

If you can ,go to an apple store. The Genius bar should be able to do a hard restore. This is coming from my wife who is an apple manager , I know nothing about apple products. Hopes that helps.

The fact that this is your daily phone and all of a sudden it is rejecting your passcode is very odd. Either there was some sort of hardware or software failure or it got hacked somehow. I don't even know if you can change your passcode without physically holding the device.

Thanks much, yeah I have made an appt with them. Hopefully it's going to be free.

I was hoping to avoid the trip, by taking care of it on my own, but oh well!

No one else has access to it.

Exactly and that's why it's so strange.

Think that's the error: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204770#usb

As long as the iPhone is registered in your name, the Apple Store Genius Bar can fix it. I recently ran into this with a family member buying a used iPhone 6 from another family member-they had forgotten their passcode (?)-you only get TEN tries before you're locked out. The original owner took it in, no problem.

Yes, I am the owner from day one and have all box and everything too.

So I guess, apple genius is the only option where I was getting appointment starting tomorrow. Will have to wait.

And if you have it enabled, after 10 tries it wipes the device.

They should be able to get it fixed. If you have that secure passcode setting on with the try limits I would turn that off. Use a six or even better a 8 digit passcode. Of course, TouchID or FaceID is much more secure.

Since I upgraded to the iPhone 6 years ago, the TouchID is really a time saver and more secure. In addition you can use ApplePay which is quick as well. So something to consider if the upgrade question does come up.

Mine does have touch ID, but when phone is restarted it always asks for passcode and not sure why it's not taking mine?

Okay I see now. Mine does that as well plus it randomly will ask for the passcode. Something got corrupted along the way.

Corruption happens. Supposedly you're better off updating via a full downloaded image in iTunes versus over the air updates.

The Apple Store will work on my 2010 laptop, no reason they shouldn't work on your 2013 phone.

But phones have less intrinsic resources. So they won't last as long as a well-specified computer.

On an older iPhone, biggest thing is get rid of unused apps & back it up regularly. I have an iPhone 4 as a personal phone, and it always gets laughs because it's the oldest & smallest smartphone around-until I tell people I only pay $80/year for TracFone on the VZW network, and it works better than my (AT&T) iPhone 7 in the country-then the laughter stops.

NOW, out of the blue it has started to work?

No clue
