Anti-Virus Decisions

I just got done loading Bitdefender Free on Win7. Everything seemed to load up fine, and Google Chrome browser seems to work fine on my machine.

So I was reading the Bitdefender Free "User's Guide" (PDF file) and it says:

"In order to be protected by Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition, you must register
your product by creating a MyBitdefender account.
Once you have registered Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition, the program will
automatically enable the Virus Shield and the Auto Scan protection modules. Product
updates are performed automatically and you are not required to configure any
settings."

On the Bitdefender User Interface, at the bottom is says "MyBitdefender" with a "Log in" button, and also says "Not logged in, 29 days left". So maybe it works 100% for 30 days (trial?), then doesn't do updated, etc unless you create a "MyBitdefender Account"?

Hummm ... I had no idea that was the case. Anyone else know about this?

Yes, that's how it works.

After looking closer, it looks like it works with 100% functionality for the first 30 days, since it originally said to log-in with "29 days left".

Anyway, I already did have an account setup from my old XP machine and was able to log-in with that info.

Bitdefender is a great free non-intrusive AV. If you are going to pay for one I'd take Rand's advice and get ESET NOD32 when it is on-sale.

Before loading Bitdefender, I did a full scan with Malwarebytes Premium, Windows Defender and also Windows "Safety Scanner" and they found nothing. Also, a day ago when my McAfee was still working it never found anything either.

Then I did a Full Scan with Bitdefender and the report says:

An On Demand scan has completed.
The scan took: 00:36:44
Files scanned: 383437
Infected items detected: 97
Files known to be clean: 53134
Scan Paths
Path Status
C:\ completed
Scan Results
No infected items have been found.

Bitdefender did not show any files quarantined, so it's confusing to me that it says "Infected items detected: 97" and then says "No infected items have been found".

Do you Bitdefender users have an idea of what this really means? Seems a bit confusing and contradictory to me.

Most likely tracking cookies. If you run Ccleaner before the scan it will delete those before BF sees them.

There's a way to turn that off, stop it from reporting on cookies, but I don't remember right off just where it is.

As far as I can tell, Bitdefender doesn't let you change the settings of anything it does. All you can do is turn it on or off, and do "scans on demand".

You have to create a custom scan, I've copied the following from a Bitdefender Tech support response here, > How Do I Stop From Detecting Cookies As A Threat?

"To stop Bitdefender from detecting them, turn OFF Autoscan from the Antivirus panel. Then, create a custom scan task by going to Scan Now -> Manage Scans -> New custom task -> Custom -> set the preferred scan settings and make sure to uncheck Scan cookies. When you are done, save the Configure Scan Options window. You need to always run this custom scan task and cookies won't be detected anymore. Remember that if you run any other predefined scan task or if you enable back Autoscan, once the scan task reaches the end, cookies will be deleted again."

As far as I can tell, you can't really change setting on anything in the Bitdefender Free version. You can only turn the "Virus Shield" and "Auto Scan" either ON or OFF ... and you can do a "Full System Scan" (by opening it in the tool tray and right clicking and selecting "Full System Scan", or you can tell it to do manual scans on individual file or folders by highlighting then and doing a right click "Scan with Bitdefender".

Yes, the Bitdefender Free is almost "too simplified". I wish was just a little control over its settings.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, it showed "Infected items detected: 97", but then also said in the same scan report "No infected items have been found". Kind of confusing IMO.

I just installed Avast in my computer (Windows 7). You can choose not to get pop ups by clicking on Settings in main screen. In the Settings panel under General, scroll down about have way and you will see two boxes to check or uncheck. I have the bottom one checked off but I have not got one pop up yet.

Ah Thanks! didn't know about that!

Does this also prevent the "Database has been updated" pop up?
Now THAT one I don't mind, really. It's the 'offers' pop ups that I don't want to see.
