The McAfee AV program is due to be renewed shortly on the Dell I purchased. The AV came as part of the Dell package. In the past I usually used AVAST free version, but, now wonder if the $59.95 McAfee renewal cost is worth it, or is there another better option? Ed

Yeah, forget McAfee. Their enterprise-level AV is good but their home-use stuff is garbage, unless they have turned some miraculous corner in the last few years.

Avast is mostly bloated nagware nowadays and not nearly as good as it used to be. I would not use McAfee if they paid me to use it. Eset NOD 32 is your best bet for great performance and protection with a paid AV. You can buy a one year one pc Eset license on Amazon right now for $25.00 or a 3 pc license for $42.00. Avira free is said to be the better of the free AV's. I use Eset and it works great without hogging resources.
If you like McAfee, you can buy it cheap. Subscription license cards for McAfee are cheap at Amazon and Ebay.

Nope. You can get 3-user licences in retail, and I think 4 and 5 user licenses from their site. You can also buy multi-year renewals from them directly.

I'm not brand loyal to ESET specifically, but they always do well in AV testing and the interface is clean and non-intrusive. That's a winner in my book.

On my Windows boxes I use Avast Free. Yes, it nags a little bit, but appears to do its job.
My suggestion is to switch to Linux and not worry about viruses/spyware/trojans.

Its a little clunky on local email client sniffing but a good program.
Also if you keep an eye on newegg the AV programs go on sale or rebate a few times a year to where its like $5-$10 per computer end cost. and sometimes even with rebate free.

I got McAfee for free after rebate. It wasn't even worth the $0.42 I paid for the stamp to send out the rebate. It significantly slowed down my dual quad-core Xeon rig with 32GB of RAM. That's how bad it is.
McAfee is pretty much worthless, I wouldn't even use it if they paid me to. My suggestion goes to Bitdefender Free.
I'm using Avast ATM and like it; it still has ads, but the newest version is lighter and faster than previous versions, and thanks to the behavior blocking/HIPS, it's testing higher in a few Youtube tests I looked at.

I use Avira (free,) Malwarebytes (free) and CCleaner (free). Avira remains on, real-time; I run malwarebytes every so often, and I use CCleaner to delete all of my temporary files, cookies, and random other junk that accumulates, every few days.
I typically leave my laptop on overnight, once per week, with everything scheduled to perform a full scan.
