I just installed Avast in my computer (Windows 7). You can choose not to get pop ups by clicking on Settings in main screen. In the Settings panel under General, scroll down about have way and you will see two boxes to check or uncheck. I have the bottom one checked off but I have not got one pop up yet.
Good to know, I might keep it now. Is there away to stop it from telling me it updates, I'd rather my computer not talk to me.

Disable avast sounds (somewhere in the settings, I don't remember where).
Settings --> Appearance --> Avast sounds (uncheck box)

i had a number of viruses and attacks from hackers and they were able to turn off malwaerbytes i will not be renewing with them.
