Another Quick Lube screw up

First and only time I went to a quick lube was back in the late 80's. First ON on my first car. They broke the oil pan nut and installed a temp rubber plug. Drove it home and when I went to leave that evening I saw a stream of oil next to my car. Plug had given and all the oil was on the driveway. Had to have someone weld a piece of pipe over the drain hole and thread the end for the plug.

Since then, with the exception of 2 leased cars, I've changed my own oil . . .

Customers demand fast and cheap. Employers demand the same thing. What actually gets delivered in a quick lube environment? A failure rate that is higher than it should be combined with general incompetency from the majority of "Lube techs" doing the job.

Nobody is paying for quality in a Quick Lube, they are only paying for fast and cheap.

I worked at a Mobil 1 Lube Express for about a year while I was in college...never had any complaints, and we were also required to show the customers the dipsticks after the fill. But you are correct...you are essentially a salesman. I just couldn't bring myself to sell stuff to someone that really didn't need it. So needless to say, I usually had the least amount a sales...but oh well, my conscious is clear.

I switched to Valvoline from Jiffy Lube oil change service. They seemed professional and I liked that you never get out of the car, unlike Jiffy that will get inside and start going thru your stuff.

But I recently, I changed my oil on my 02 suburban and the filter would not budge. The wrench started to crush the filter so I stopped and used a propane torch to heat the filter to get it to move. They had torqued it on so tight the gasket was crushed and distorted. I needed a breaker bar to get the oil plug out. They must have torqued it to 100 ft/lbs.

Now I'm dubious of taking my car to a "professional" to have this most simple procedure performed as I don't want to end up with a stripped out oil plug or worse.

And they wondered why I didn't want them touching anything but the oil.

Now I need to get under the vette and see if they did the same thing. So many people end up with a huge mess with filters that are over torqued.
