I have always been a bit skeptical of Amsoil, a product generally unavailable in stores and sold by home marketers. This past week however, I was impressed that they did have oil for my specific applications, 4 stroke Marine outboard oil, and 50cc Scooter oil. This has gotten me to reconsider Amsoil products. Can someone educate me about the actual quality of Amsoil products? Can a product marketed through home sales truly be as good as synthetics by mega giants Mobil or Pennzoil? If so how? I genuinely want to understand.

Why not? What does the distribution model have to do with quality of the product itself?

You ask if Amsoil can be as good as Mobil or Pennzoil, I think Amsoil has set the bar on motor oil, the question could be are these other oils as good as Amsoil? Better yet, do they need to be?- overkill comes to mind.
Mobil and Pennzoil could make a oil too match Amsoils top product, it would be very expensive and not sell very well. Not much of a gap between them anyway.

Amsoil makes a top notch product...PERIOD. They have been at synthetics for a long time. Forget the sales model, look at the end product. The thing is, mass marketed oils like Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum etc. have a lower price point due to the bulk of their sales. I personally do not have a need for Amsoil (oil) because I do not extend my OCI's.
Their gear oils and fluids are excellent as well.

Amsoil is bar none a quality product no matter what you buy. They set the bar as far as extended oil changes.
I have used their products for years however I feel I cannot justify their cost based on my intervals.
I will never take anything away from amsoil however in my particular situation I can bug jugs of pp for the same cost as 2 quarts of amsoil and since I never go 10000 miles between changes that may not be using the cheaper stuff to its full potential.
I agree that some salesmen of amsoil do the company as a whole no favours and ruin it for the good, professional salesmen however that sales model has no bearing on the product as a whole.

I am a preferred buyer and just order it online and its on my porch in 2 days.

Everything they sell is top notch in its category.

IMHO - you can find motor oils as good at Walmart (except for their 4-Stroke OPE oil), Mobil 1, PP, PU, etc.

But their gear oil and ATF is what I buy. I do not believe you can easily find anything as good locally. I plan ahead and get enough for 1 maybe 2 years to save on shipping.

+1 - my order for gear oil and compressor oil arrived in the same time frame. I believe there engine oils that are more readily available, cost less, and perform as well for the average user as Amsoil (most do not extend long enough to fully use M1, PU, PP, etc. much less Amsoil).

Amsoil's quality of products speak for themselves. Price and lousy dealers another story.

Look for our resident Amsoil salesman here Pablo. He is the top poster on this site and contact him for Amsoil products. There are some bad dealers out there but Pablo is not one of them.

If you took Mobil 1 out of the picture, I'd say yes Amsoil has been setting the bar. It just so happens that XOM's flag ship product is synthetic oils and they have always made a very good one.

Amsoil has flexibility advantages and isn't tied to any suppliers. The others shop around too, but I would assume Amsoil does more so being they are only a blender.

Amsoil has improved a lot over the last few years IMO. All of these companies are competing fiercely for shelf space and sales now that synthetics have become increasingly popular due to OEM demands and environmental demands.

Amsoil makes great ATF. I run their ATF in all of our cars. When it comes to full synthetic motor oil, there are oil out there just as good for almost half the cost (PU, Mobil 1 Extended Performance).

I would definitely argue that today's big names are as good as most of anything Amsoil has. The demand is there so they are now competing for that market and very capable. All of these companies have engineers and chemists with Phd's.

In what way are some of the dealers lousy? Overselling the products capabilities?

That, and slamming competitors with outright falsehoods. The product can sell itself on its own merit, it doesn't need people making stuff up to make it move.

I am an amsoil dealer and I truly feel they make a top tier product. They specialize in extended drains so if you change your oil every 3-5k any off the shelf oil is good, however for extended drains is where amsoil stands out. Plus, they have different formulas for different applications unlike other companies so they definitely have a great product lineup. If you sign up as a preferred customer you can buy amsoil oe at near same cost as Mobil 1.

Ask Pablo to sign you up and get all the amsoil you want

AMSOIL pretty much wrote the book on synthetic oil... It is a smaller company but it is a top notch product. I currently have amsoil O.E 5W30 in my car and i like it alot. They are still using the mpre expensive additives that the major oil copanys are moving away from.

No, the Germans pretty much wrote the book on Synthetic oil, as they invented it. The biggest developer of it in North America was, and probably still is Mobil (now Exxon-Mobil).

What AMSOIL did was bring a product that was geared toward the aviation industry to the automotive scene with Al's development (working with HATCO as per Tom NJ) of the first API-approved synthetic oil. This then led to Mobil introducing Mobil 1 and the trend of synthetic automotive lubricants was set in motion. We can thank Al for that

Since then, they have worked extremely hard at developing long-drain lubricants that deliver exceptional performance, and this, along with their incredibly broad range of products, is what sets them apart from their peers.

Please note that I'm a dealer of their products. I've got their gear oil going in my M5, I have their ATF in its PS reservoir, and I have AZO in my Expedition. I believe in the quality of their products. However, I'm NOT a fan of how some dealers portray their product, the company, or its history (not that this applies to you, I just want to put that out there). The facts about the company, its history and its products can stand on their own
