Amsoil XLF or ASL?

Been thinking about switching over to Amsoil Oil for my Civic and noticed the local Amsoil dealer stocks both the 5w30 "ASL"(http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/asl.aspx) and the 5w30 "XLF" (http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/xlf.aspx). The "XLF" is about $1.50 less per quart. What warrants the ASL costing a $1.50 more?

The Amsoil will replace GC, which I have been running in the supercharged DOHC 2.0 motor for the last 25K miles. Currently at 85K and have been doing 6.5-7K mile OCIs. I drive about 2500-3000 miles a month.
 
XLF is a GRPIII oil and Amsoil says is good for 7500. API Certified.

ASL is GRPIV PAO mainly and Amsoil says it is good out to 25000 or one year in normal use. Not certified but for the engine will surpass any meaningful wear requirements. Might have too much zinc or what not for certification but OH WELL.

Like a regular company has a regular and premium product, Amsoil does too. Both do well but the full blown might be a tad better with that SuperCharger.

You could also use Series 2000 OW-30 oil if ya like too. That is a bit more tan ASL.
 
The XLF is a group III synthetic warranted for 7500 normal or severe miles or 6 months, whichever occurs first.
The ASL is a group IV PAO warranted for 25,000 normal or 15,000 sever miles or 1 year, whichever occurs first.
 
There is no PAO in XLF to my knowledge.

2004 - Hmmm, why not an XW-20? I think the new 0W-20, ASM would be the way to go.

Supercharged? How long are the OCI's? ASM will be best.

How come the local Amsoil dealer didn't know the difference?
 
Amsoils recommendation for supercharged/turbocharged engines using their standard 0w-20/5w-30/10w-30,PAO-Ester based synthetics,is a maximum OCI of 15,000 miles/1 year under "normal"(read ideal),driving conditions.

I'd recommend the 100% synthetic, 5w-30/ASL product here with a max. OCI of 10,000 miles if you don't plan on doing any oil analysis testing. If you want to stick with 6k-7.5k OCI's, that would be very conservative in my experience.

Aside from the PAO/Ester basestock, the ASL product also has a significantly more robust, 12 TBN additive package, which makes it more suitable for extended drains.

Both are using the same/similar additive chemistry which is great IMO. Excellent oils priced very well.
 
Since this engine is supercharged and you are in a warm climate, I'd stick with the Amsoil 5w-30 or 10w-30 and not the new 0w-20, just to err on the side of conservatism....

I actually didnt get a chance to ask, he was with a customer at the time and I was just stopping in for a quick moment to look at prices.

Yeah Im going to stick with a 5w-30. No one has made a definite connection to it, but a lot of owners with the same engine (k20a3) along with aftermarket supercharger have found that their cams were being chewed up when running strictly 5w-20. The motor just a step up above the k20a3, which is the k20a2, runs 5w-30. With the added strain on the engine from the SC, I figure a 5w-30 is efficient.
