Amsoil TSO 0w-30 -- VI Improvers?

Last time I asked they told me zero VII's.
That's the old formula - the site needs updating. They used to do that with a very high viscosity, very great low temp. flow 0W-30. Now that the viscosity is in the 10.4 the VI is 177.
Yikes. I knew the HTHS dropped slightly, but I didn't know it was thinner at operating temp and had a lower VI as well.
What gives? Those sound like downgrades to me, unless they're really trying to make that oil more mainstream...

In some ways it very much is an upgrade. The old formula was so borderline thick for a 30, that it would overshoot with age/time/usage. I never used to hear the end of - people would get carried away with it. New formula holds viscosity much better, with same low wear rates.
My only rap against this oil is the price. The minor irritants are that it's not a great choice for old iron, and it's a highway miler oil.

It would also be nice if Amsoil would stretch their EaO filter warranty mileage to 35,000 miles normal/17,500 miles severe/1 year whichever comes first to match the TSO oil. Unofficially for myself, I would likely stretch it anyway, but I don't do that many miles in a year.
35K miles in one year? Gotta be on the highway!
And if you are twiddling around town for 35K in one year - well that's severe 15K MAX service in my book.
Have you tried them yet? I just got 2 gallons of Amsoil 0w30 and two Eao's. I was all hyped up to try 15k with the first gallon, and something more with the second. The Amsoil box showed up and I thought it was Christmas. I opened one of the filters to find a wrinkled label and a half hanging off gasket with what looked like a dirt film on it - boy what a let down. The first thing that came to mind was that I got "frammed".
I managed to get the gasket back in its track - it wasn't easy. Second filter was ok, but still looked like a dirt film on the gasket. I'm going to clean it carefully with oil. I'm going to do a particle count at 7500 and cut open the filter. Hopefully, that will be a pleasant suprise, otherwise, back to 2 bucks and some change SuperTech.

I've bought and used the EaO filter for my van and coupe and a couple for my motorcycle and they were all in perfect condition. I did have a customer that had one leak in about a hundred of the ones I know of. And UPS dented another one. Amsoil replaced both of those.

It looks like a Donaldson design to me. Its heavy for its size, so that was a good sign. The design for holding the gasket must really give them trouble, now after seeing one mis-aligned, I bet its their number one source of first pass failure. Its really not a big deal, its flat now and will do its job. The gasket width is nice, probably two to three times wider than others.
Kinda like buying apples, sometimes you focus too much on the shiny wax, instead of the inners.

I've never had any trouble with an Amsoil shipment. 177 is a high VI and nothing to gripe about for sure. Some people just can't handle the fact that Amsoil is the best oil and filters money can buy......

I suppose since Amsoil compares their products against competitors by name using standard ASTM tests that anyone can duplicate and no one has sued them or proven them incorrect, what more do you want?
I guess that makes it fact! But Motul claims good stuff about their oil. What about L.E.oil? Royal purple with Synlec is the cats meow. Even Chevron Delo 400 and Mobil Delvac 1300 boasts 1,000,000 mile engine life on over the road diesel engines. I am almost sure Eon makes great claims .
I think it's a matter of semantics as to whether the Amsoil 0w0-30 has VI modifiers. I suspect they may be using a combination of a very low temp PAO like the Mobil "Spectrasyn Plus", combined with some of the very viscous Spectrasyn Ultra, which behaves like a shear stable polymeric thickener. The spectrasyn ultra has a very high viscosity of up to 300 in some grades, so blending in just a bit should really ramp up the VI. It is going to have some thickening effect on the oil at low temps as well, however a 4 Cst PAO will have a PP of about -76F. So even with some of the thicker stuff blended in I think it's possible to achieve the -60F PP of the Amsoil 0w-30.

Steve - the difference is that Amsoil invites the competition to prove them wrong by comparing their products by name to the others using ASTM tests. Royal Purple, Motul, L.E., Chevron, Mobil don't do any name brand comparisons. Thus they can pretty much say anything they want. They use verbage to compare their products to un-named competitors. They play it safe. Maybe it is because they have no other choice.
