Any comments on this UOA appreciated.
Car has 35384 total kilometers (22115 miles). This is the second UOA and both have shown Silicon and fuel in the oil. This report shows a little water as well. Is silicon an indication of dirt getting through or by the filter? The first report was on factory fill????

Thank you for looking.

So thats about 10K miles on the oil.

How did you take your sample? What lab did you use?

What is the oil capacity? Any make-up oil added?

The water, K and Na, Si could be coolant related.

On the other hand you have some residual old oil, as shown by the Mo.

The good news is the Sn and Pb and Cu came down nicely.

Honestly I would do a short run and sample again. This is the second oil the car has seen, so it seems MB's throw a decent level of break in metals.

The oil held up great.

Results of both these analyses look fine to me. You'll notice that all the wear metals are trending down from the factory fill, which is what I look for. The silicone is mostly from gasket leaching (note how much it dropped) and will dissipate over time. The trace of Na/K is probably salt spray ingestion on the Atlantic coast and also explains the trace of water. I"m guessing this MB engine has chain driven, DOHC's(?), hence you can expect to see higher rates of Fe wear.

The latest version of the S2000 is being formulated @ 10.5 CST. So the viscosity is essentially unchanged and shows no thickening due to evaporation or oxidation. A nice difference from the previous additive chemistry of the S2000.
I'm assuming the TBN was tested using the ASTM D-4739 test protocol, in which case there is at least 5000 miles of life left in this oil.

You can safely change oil on the basis of the Mercedes OLM for this engine/oil combo.

How many miles on the firs sample? Wear has dropped a bit, due to break-in. Both oils showed strong TBN numbers, meaning you could go further.

Mort,

Both the 0w-30 and the 5w-40 are excellent products. I haven't tested the latest version of the 5w-40, but it does meet the MB 229.51 specification they now require for gas and their latest, common rail turbodiesel engines. The 5w-40 is also a bit thicker and may reduce this Fe wear a bit.

The 5w-40 does start out with a lower TBN than the 0w-30, so you can also expect it to test out lower after 16,000km. However I think the wear rates will be at least as good as you see here. I run 16,000km OCI's with Amsoil in a 1.8L/225 Hp Audi turbo with only a 4.5L sump, so this is fairly easy service for these oils.

I have been using the Amsoil 5w-40 European Formula in our 2000 C280(which is the 2.8 L version of your 2.6L V6) Although I have not done a UOA on it, I change it when the meter indicates on the dash. I have ZERO oil consumption over 11,000 miles(8 1/2 qt. sump) The 5w-40 meets the MB221.3(?) spec this V6 needs.

Thanks Guys.
Yes I did change to Amsoil 5W40 European AFL when I did the change and I will see how it does. The Series 2000 seems to be very nice oil and I like it a lot but I thought I should go with the oil specified for the Benz. I use the Flexible Sevice System to time my service intervals as well.

Pablo or TooSlick do you think I should have a preference for the 5W40 European over the 0W30 Series 2000?

The UOA was done by Fluid Life in Ontario, Canada. I took the sample by pulling the plug and letting the oil drain into the sample bottle. The sump takes 7 liters to fill and no make up oil was added over the 16000km ( 10000 miles).

Buster - The first oil (factory fill) had 18665 km (11666 miles) on it. The wear does seem to be down a bit and the condition of the oil still appears to be good. I will stick with the MB FSS so the computer and the dealer don't freak out at me.

TooSlick - Thanks for the advice on the oil. I will see how it comes out in 16000 km.

benjamming - The oil level was above the add level. There is no dip stick in the car

so I check it using the electronic level system in the PCM and it only tells me if the level is OK or how much to add. So far I have not had to add any make up oil. Yes the oil was warm when I changed it . I took it out for a 50 km run before I changed it.

Mort,

Nothing wrong with your results.

The K, Na and water cpncentrations of that mileage is nothing.

DON'T CHANGE A THING!
