Recently flushed my 22re with distilled H2O after a headgasket job and filled it with Amsoil/dist. H20 50/50 mix. I like Amsoil products and I had some extra around so that's why I used it.

I don't want to shell out another $35 for a gallon to top it off. Zerex G-05 is more like $13 at NAPA and is supposedly good for older import vehicles (low silicates, etc.) Sound like a good idea, any potential issues mixing it with a PG coolant?

I think you can mix ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. I think G-05 would be a bad choice though. I'm not sure Amsoil's PG formula, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was OAT based. I would either get one of the PGs like Prestone Lowtox or Sierra or even use one of the Dexclone all makes or Peak Global if it is just a top off.

Good thought. I just looked this up on Amsoil's site:

"AMSOIL Antifreeze & Coolant is dyed neutral yellow and is compatible with all ethylene and propylene antifreeze and coolant formulations on the market, including DEX-Cool®, Sierra® and Zerex®. It is also compatible with fully formulated diesel anti-freezes and other organic acid technology (OAT) and hybrid organic acid technology (HOAT) formulations."

Still, that may not mean that Zerex G-05 is the *best* thing to top if off with.

It sounds like it is an OAT formula and would be most compatible with Prestone lowtox, Dexcool or Peak global. I'd probably go with Lowtox fist then Peak global and then Dexclone.

So the trick would be to try to stick with another PG formulation if possible?

How much do you need to top up? If it's just a little, use distilled water. In GA you will be fine even at 40-45%.

Frankly I never mix coolant types. It won't ruin the engine in a short run, but it's always a messy soup.

Maybe there is a dealer around your area that will sell at his cost, rather than full retail.

Pablo, thanks for the advice.

I don't need to top off now, but I like to carry a gallon of pre-mixed coolant with me. The vehicle sees alot of offroad day trips; it's nice to have extra when you're out in the woods!

Best would be to get some more Amsoil PG for top off and when you go to change the anti-freeze then you could decide on want formula to use. Barring that I think it'd be best to go with Prestone Lowtox if you can find it, then Peak Global, then All Makes dexclone.

If you have a couple more things you want to order in the near future, let me know then you can get the preferred customer deal, knock the price down and combine the shipping with the other stuff.

Cool, glad I asked folks here about it.

I'm always ordering Amsoil for myself and friends (whoever I can talk into using it LOL) so I'm sure I'll be in touch with you in the near future, Pablo. Thanks for the offer.
