I run Kawasaki-powered commercial lawn mowers. Their duty is severe and I'd like to try Amsoil. Amsoil has their 4-stroke small engine oil that is described as a robust SAE 30 and 10w30. However, Kawasaki has recently started calling for 40 or 50 weights in their engines. I am wondering if the Amsoil UTV 10w40 would be a better option, but I would like to know the difference in their formulations....and if this is a good idea. ( The engines in question are not under warranty.) please, no discussions on other oil brands. I know plenty of other brands that are also suitable, and understand that.

Have you seen the "upgrade" for many of the auto transmissions? Some are now recommending 10w-50 and 20w-50.

I have multiple Kawi's on my commercial mowers.
Yes, I saw the change in recommendations. 10w40 to 20w50 cover the range for most of my temps....unless Kawi is just recommending the 20w50 because of some recent oil usage issues in newer models.
Regardless...I'd like to know between the 2 oils in my OP, what difference there might be other than rated viscosity.

For what it's worth I've run amsoil small engine SAE 10w30/30 weight for 1300hrs on my Kawasaki 6hp fj180v engine, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't run nearly as hot as the bigger 15-37hp Kawasaki engines. My bigger engine will burn your hand touching the valve cover after running for 10 minutes whereas it takes a good 25-30 minutes to get that hot on my fj180v. I agree with the heavier weights atleast in the bigger engines. My 6hp Kawasaki runs super cool in the winter and has a white creamy buildup around the oil fill cap like what you get on cars.

The oils are similar. If you have power equipment in warm climates that requires XW-40 I wouldn't hesitate to use the UTV 10W-40. They both have the good AW and anti-oxidant additive help with wear protection in use and corrosion prevention in storage.

Amsoil 10W-40 UTF

I absolutely would run UTF if my manufacturer called for a 40 them are some impressive numbers on that oil I already run the 30 4stroke small engine oil never a problem nor usage.

Kawasaki never dropped there 30 weight recommendation. So I would still consider using Amsoil 4-stroke small engine oil. And you should be able to use that up to the hottest it gets around where you live.

Thanks guys. I think I'll go with the UTF, and keep to the 30 4-stroke for my smaller engines.

I'm currently using Amsoil 30/10w30 in my FS691. I certainly do not have a severe duty and I only have 40 hours on it, but it's doing well so far. I broke it with SuperTech 30wt at 5hrs, 10hrs then at 20hrs switched to the Amsoil.

I have had zero usage to date.

On the other hand, I bet if you use a normal 30 or 40 and keep it changed and full, it would last a very long time.

Since this original post months ago, I've been using the Amsoil 30w 4-stroke in my smaller Honda engines and in the bigger Kawi's, running a quart of the same plus a quart of the 10w40 UTF. Very happy with it.
