John Deere x590 oil?

Purchased a Deere x590 last year before the price increases :).

It has the Kawasaki FS730 EFI engine. Deere recommends 10w30 oil and includes their brand of oil in the tune up kit (oil, oil filter, air filter, plugs, etc). However Kawasaki recommends 10w40 oil and their corresponding tune up kit includes similar parts as the Deere branded kit except for the oil which is 10w40.

Your thoughts on which oil to use, Deere recommended 10w30 or Kawasaki recommended 10w40?

Kawasaki does list 10w30 and 20w50 as alternatives to 10w40 in the engine manual.

Would the 20w50 oil be more useful for the commercial market that runs their mowers 8-10 hours a day?

My usage is residential, hilly terrain with about 100hours per year on the engine. Sorry for all the questions.

Been using rotella 10w-30 in my friends x320 (also kawasaki) she got it used and probably has owned it for 12+ years. No issues using 10w-30 in it; generally a suitable 10w-30 will be easier to find (e.g. walmart etc)

I'm still running a synthetic 10w30 in my 13 year old workplace zero turn with 23hp Kawasaki. Kawasaki used to be adamant about using 10w30, then several years ago came out with their revised guidelines suggesting 10w40. With a recommendations from 10w30 to 20w50, I always question why they skipped 15w40?

As long as you check the oil it should be fine. Kawasaki has been recommending a thicker oil since some of their engines have been burning oil even when new. A 10w30 would be fine. Some of the commercial mowers I see recommend 15w50 if used commercially.

I'd stick with the JD recommendation through the warranty period then use what ever viscosity you want after that. Either 10W30 or 10W40 should work, but IMO the 10W40 is unlikely to be synthetic based on my research. Not sure that matters.

Just my $0.02

I run HDEO 10w-30 in my ope. Never had an oil related failure. The kawasaki in the deere mowers seem to do very well on 10w-30. Maybe if your in the southern half of the US or SW, sure maybe bump up to 10w-40 but not sure it would gain you anything.

Location?
Hours used per year?
Uses?

Go with the 10W-40 or check the most up to date manual online. You’ll likely find that they recommend 20W-50 now for temps above 30. Kawasaki has been incrementally increasing the viscosity recommendations for a lot of their motors. They started with 10W-30, then 10W-40, and now 20W-50.

According to Kawasaki’s website, this engine has 20W50 as recommended in ambient temps over 32 Fahrenheit.

Looking at that chart plus the one from B&S recommending synthetic 15w-50 for commercial use has convinced me that 15w-40 HDEO is a good compromise for most homeowners. My JD D140 has been running 15w-40 RT6 for two seasons now. Started it up a week or two ago with an oil temperature at or below freezing with a three year old battery, no labor on starting whatsoever.

I do all the maintenance on my Mother-in-law’s John Deere x475 tractor with the Kawasaki FD671D v-twin engine. I’ve always used full synthetic 10-30 year round here in eastern central Ohio. Everything from mowing her 2.5 acres of hillside ground to plowing her driveway in the winter.

Matt

It seems that Kawasaki stuck to grades that are available in gas rated motor oils. But anything between 10w30 to 20w50 should work. I run 5w40.

Your thoughts on which oil to use, Deere recommended 10w30 or Kawasaki recommended 10w40? Kawasaki still has 10w30 in their recommendation. I would follow Kawasaki's temperature chart to decide which oil to use. I would use 5w40 or 15w40 instead of 10w40.

Would the 20w50 oil be more useful for the commercial market that runs their mowers 8-10 hours a day? Yes, and also where it is hot, but I would use 15w50 instead.

You can use a Wix 51516 / Fram 3600 / Purolator 20195 instead of the Deere AM125424 oil filter…

Holds about 8 more ounces of oil…
