Amsoil in all my vehicles now

I have switched over both my vehicles to Amsoil. I have a 2002 4.0L V6 SOHC Explorer and a 2007 Toyota Prius and both are now on what will be extended drain intervals with Amsoil. The Explorer is on 0w30 SSO and a Wix filter while the Prius is on ASM 0W-20 with an EaO filter.

The Prius is the daily use car and sees ~12,000 miles/year so I expect to change it out at the one year mark. The Explorer is now lightly used and I'll change it out at 5,000 miles which will be somewhere near the 1 1/2 mark.

5k mile OCI seems a waste w/ Amsoil. Try a less expensive synthetic or even a full conventional for this type of OCI and save your money.
 
Amsoil is the good stuff and can be used for much longer than 5K especially in a Toyota... You should send a UOA to Terry Dyson and see if you can run the EAO filter for more than 1 change like he told me... This will help you cut down on the cost as the EAO oil filters can stand up to a lot of dirt before needing to be changed.
 
I agree with Spartuss. Since the Explorer is only driven 5000 miles in 18 months, I'd run dino and change it once a year. SSO and EAO is WAAAAAAY overkill for your situation.

2007 Prius has a warranty till 60k or 2012.

With that complex of a car, the LAST thing I'd be doing is extended OCIs past 5k miles or 6months whichever comes first.

Remember the Cathy Covington thread where her motorhome's motor blew up and she had done oil changes over the "severe service" limits in the owner's manual, and Ford gave her the finger (and won)?

I'd listen to the owner's manual (a legal contract - read it carefully) over a salesman. No offense Pablo, but....

You people that whine about the warranty are so hilarious.

Most customers that do have mechanical issues are not dealing with an oil related issue 99% of the time,but hey nice try though!
 
Thanks for everyone's opinion on this! The 5K is one the Explorer that sees few miles, perhaps 5K miles in 1.5 to 2 years. I wanted a good synthetic to go that long time wise rather than dino, so Amsoil it is.

The Prius sees ~12K miles/year and I want to go extended drain. I did the last internal at 5K with Mobil 1 5w30 and that oil could easily have gone farther according to the UOA. The 0W-20 weight has been shown by a good number of UOA's here in N. America to give good lubrication to the Prius (and is a recommended weight in the Japanese owners manual) and the Amsoil ASM should be more than able to go 12K/1 year in it. We'll see!

We have a winner!

Since I have (and will have further) UOA to show there is little chance that I will sucessfully be denied warranty coverage if it comes to that. Unless the ASM actually sucks and breaks the [censored] engine!

As someone who had a warranty claim paid OUT of WARRATNY due to FOLLOWING THE MFG OCI I'm glad I'm hilarious.

I was laughing all the way in my Rent-a-car while they repaired my head gaskets.

I can promise that if I did not follow their recommended OCI I would have been told to pound sand.

I like Amsoil products. I use them. But until the warranty has come and gone, I'd use XL if I wanted to use Amsoil and eat the $$. Or something else.

I just showed your post to a floor supervisor and he laughed.

What oil you used has not a [censored] thing to do with the fact you had to have head gaskets replaced.They would've covered the head gasket repair regardless of what oil was in the crankcase.

This is from a service technician,have a good day Bill!

Call up Toyota (I have) and tell them about your UOAs. Make sure you let them know that you are running a non-API SM oil for entended OCI past their recommended OCIs.

Let me know what they say.

Run XL if you are going to do anything. One less problem...
