Can someone please explain why these two AMSoil graphs are both from November 2008 but they don't match up?

I believe the first graph is using their premium synthetic 5w30 auto oil. The bottom uses 10w30. Also, different oils are used in the testing, and I think (though I may be wrong) that they are examining two different things.

Wow first time I have seen Redline on their list of oils!!! Go Redline....I did see them in their gear oil comparo when Amsoil reformulated and brought out their MTL. Most of what is on their tracks with my own experince especialy the PP evap loss's. It is theonly oil my Lawn and garden tractor eats up like crazy!I put M1 backin it and the consuption goes away.

American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) numbers = "marketing"?

Makes me wonder when I don't see the other high quality oils being tested. It seems Amsoil may have coincidentally left out oils that performed better.

Which ones? I don't see too many missing ..at least in popular names. You're not going to pull some name like Elf or some other oil that only some country club set is going to order in for their thoroughbreds for weekend jaunting on "the course", are you?

Such as?

Why don't we see Redline in the second chart, but see it in the first chart?

Why is Castrol missing from the first chart, but in the second chart?

Why are they comparing Castrol GTX and not EDGE?

It really would be nice to see full disclosure and the same tests across each oil.

Sure, tests are $$$, but it would be nice to see full comparison over all the same tests, over the same oils.

So much variation makes me think that it was selective choosing and thus not telling the full story - other oils not shown might be superior...

As answered for the OP. The two graphs are for two different viscosities. One (the 10W-30) is just an update of tests run several times over the years with the same brands chosen each time. The top one was a newer selection of oil choices in 5W-30, and obviously they chose some different brands. Amsoil did select two more 10W-30's here:

http://www.amsoil.com/comparison/volatility-test.pdf

Not sure why Castrol was not chosen the second time. I don't really think it was evil intent. The first go around of oil selections, there was no Edge on the market.

JHZR2 - although these tests have the same date, Amsoil is not displaying them together or even using them together as one would think reading the OP. As I just wrote above these were distinct test banks, with the 10W-30 started some years ago being updated every couple years.

It's always easy to say some oil not tested must be better. But honestly this kind of marketing is not for folks using RLI/NEO/etc or most any Euro oils.

If there is some oil you would like to see Amsoil test, we could start contacting them directly as I do.

No matter what oil is tested it will never be better than the Amsoil listed because why would Amsoil list this as an ad for their product? Yet if you want to take the time you will see GTX BEATING some of the other weights in the NOACK listing, that Amsoil makes, that cost 2x as much.Yes I know it is a different wt. but you can switch wts around at times. If you believe these graphs then you might think of someone being with you when you shop.

While you're right about Amsoil getting bashed while the fanboy's brand (the one complaining) gets a free pass for their marketing spew, if you have seen the Amsoil Severe Gear paper ..Amsoil SVG DID NOT get the highest ratings in every category. It was the only one that passed ALL the tests.
