For those of us who don't know, why not take a moment and explain what makes this oil a good deal? Price? Value? Additive package? Base stock(s)? VOA/UOA results?

I'd say he's asking why the Amsoil is cheaper than other Euro oils.

It's likely a lower tier oil. Price is usually indicative of performance level to some degree. Could also be due to sales volume and other factors too. Generally speaking, costly components make the oil more expensive.

What are the list of the approvals you are comparing? And the prices?

In the 40 grade department, I often find M1 Euro 0/5W-40 and Castrol Edge Euro 0/5W-40 on sale for $23-24 / 5 qt. Both loaded with exact long list of approvals.

Approvals are minimum set standard. There is difference in Castrol line up between 5W30/40 and 0W30/40. 0W30/40 are up to 50% PAO based, and premier products for Castrol.
5W30/40 are step down. There are oils in Castrol line up lower than Edge 5W30/40, a Magnatec that on are available on some markets with LL01, MB229.5 etc. Similarly with Mobil1. Mobil1 is XOM's top tier product, Mobil Super also comes with slew of approvals, but it is step down.

Well he states "their" so I think he's comparing to the other Amsoil Euro oils which are 5w-30 and 0w-30. Short answer - I don't know. As others state, I think its the approvals. the 5w-40 and the 0/5w-30's cover many of the same approvals but not all. I know for a fact the 30 weights have the VW Audi approval for my wife's Atlas and the 40 does not, but I can't remember the 50x.xx designation.

And yes the price difference is pretty substantial. Its as expensive or more than some signature series.

I didn't know that about Castrol Edge Euro 5W-30 vs 0W-30/40.

How does the PAO and/or ester component compare to M1 ESP 0W-30?

Wow Walmart has the Castrol 0w-40 Euro 5qt listed for $37.99. One of these days I might try it. What's so great about it? I'm intrigued.

Walmart in my area stopped carrying Castrol 0w-40 since the pandemic. Haven't seen it since. It was made in Belgium. Probably transportation issues made it expensive, and now the tariffs.

How does this Oil compare to Mobil 1 ESP X4 0W40?
ESP is a mid-saps formula with some esters. AMSoil has a mid-saps 5w40 but I'm not sure if we know exactly what bases AMSoil is using.

None of the Amsoil options are approved or recommended for VW 511 or Porsche C40, so that is probably the key distinction for most ESP buyers.

It is up to 50% PAO. More shear stable than 5W40 and bit higher HTHS.
I would go Castrol Edge 0W30. You can find it in Advance Auto Parts or Auto Zone $37 plus filter for 5qt. It is same recipe as 0W40 but more shear stable and lower Noack.

If you do this oil + filter deal, can you return the filter for a full credit? That would make it similar in price to Walmart oils.

I have no idea. Sometimes they have MANN filters for BMW, so I just get it there or get it for Sequoia.
