I havn't changed many of these filters yet but they've never plugged up this soon. Could it be from the cold weather and condenstaion? Has anyone else noticed that their bypass filters don't last as long in cold weather?

No, it's not clogged. You live in Canada. It must be cold there. I live in Wisconsin, and it's cold here too. That's normal operation for the bypass filter.

I put a new filter on last November. Then I drove 60 to meet my brother in the center of the sate. He was late, so I checked both the FF and bypass filters for warmth.

The bottom of the bypass was cold to the touch, warm in the middle, and hot on the top where the oil enters. The FF filter was hot to the touch.

12k is a lot of miles on a bypass filter. When I ran a Frantz and was late on changing it it would cool down within 3k to 4k winter or summer.

I've run both an Oilguard and AMSOIL parasitic bypass on my car. They both acted similarly in the cold -- the engine has to be warm, and the oil has to be up to normal temp before either of them flowed enough to feel warm - especially in the winter. Mike is spot-on.

I know - this is a dual remote unit, not a parasitic unit. And it is possible that a bias valve can be obstructed. HOWEVER... The valve is there to help oil flow thru the bypass element. Due to it's nature, there's a lot of resistance to flow. The path of least resistance, and the path the oil will take without the valve in place, is thru the full-flow. This will result in a cold bypass element. If the valve is stuck in a position that that restricts flow to the bypass, I suspect that it would starve the full-flow, and thus the engine, as well. Since you're not seeing oil starvation, I'd echo Mr. Spark's suggestion: Take it on the road for 30-45 minutes and check the filter temperature.

The only problems we have experienced is the filters spinning loose from engine vibration and leaking all over the place. We run ours for 6,000 miles due to the trucks idleing as much as they do, probably 50% or more of the time.

Rob, The bypass filter elements are AMSOIL's own patented design and are 100% manufactured at AMSOIL's plant in Superior, WI.

While the SDF filters are manufactured by Hastings, they're made to AMSOIL specs and are not simply pulled from Hastings' line and repainted.

Amsoil SDF FF filters are made by Baldwin not Hastings.

msparks,

This isn't a knock on Amsoil (I use Amsoil oil and know how good the oil is), but......why is the equivalent Baldwin filter so much cheaper than the Amsoil filter. If they are the same thing I'm trying to figure out where the additional costs from Amsoil come from?

Who said they are the same?

First off who said they are the same. I'm not a filter engineer. I can only put out the info that is fed to me by Corp.
From what I've been told is that Baldwin/Hastings manufactures the filters for Amsoil but to Amsoil Specs, they use a different media, and other components to make the filter better. with more capacity, efficiency and ruggedness.

BTW, now Amsoil is carrying donaldson heavy duty filters for OTR trucks and other diesels that are even better than the amsoil SDF filters.

For what it's worth the hastings filters (that amsoil can also get) are spec'd for the factory recommended interval. The Amsoil SDF filters are spec'd for 12500 miles or 6 months whichever comes first.

Hope this helps.

Lastlt since this is a by-pass question.

The Amsoil By-pass filters are made in house right next door to corp headquarters in superior WI. The bypass filters are in no way connected with Hastings/Baldwin.

I think Amsoil bypass filters and air filters are made by a company owned by Al Amatuzo (owner & founder of Amsoil). Amsoil oil filters are made by Clarcor which also makes Baldwin, Hastings, Clevite, and other brands.

No one will tell us if Amsoil filters really are different from Baldwin/Hastings. Baldwin says to ask Amsoil. Amsoils claims they are.

Identical to the Cummins thread 1-16. The gasket is about the same as most filters 2 3/8 ID and 2 3/4 OD ..within the FL1A size gasket.

Amsoil's cheapest mount for their bypass filters is the BP-80A for about $15+ s&h.

..and just in case....

If you're thinking of somehow getting a bypass filter on the cheap by cutting out Amsoil somehow ..you're wasting your time. They've made just about everything in ba$tard threads/sizes so that any alternative avenue is just about as expensive.
read this and then read this

They just get a big chunk in the up front costs instead of the recurring filter sales.

Thanks for the info Gary, and yes you have just confirmed that I have been spinning my wheels trying to find a by pass filter with those thread sizes other than Amsoil, I will give them a call and get a new one from them, again thanks.
