First, 100% synthetic is still cause for argument here. The base stocks are different - the XL has group III in it.
But they are fairly different in additive chemistry as well. The XL line is more for the price conscious consumer that isn't looking for extended drains. So it is marketed and built as such.
That's true, they do say that it is a synthetic oil. They didn't say 100% synthetic (although they could legally if they wanted to).
It actually performs quite well in my odyssey. But I am waiting to try out the 0W20.
Not everyone thinks like you rsylvstr. Some people look at a $6 qt oil and freak out. I'm with ya, I don't mind spending a few extra bucks on the top shelf stuff. But I can't argue that the XL does extremely well and is a pretty good value. When you look at the cost of a tank of gas...
XLM = 5W-20 = Group III oil, with a fine additive pack, but not a super long life. 7.5K or 6 months or MAX OEM OCI recommendation.
ASL = 5w-30 = Group IV oil, with esters, strong multidimensional additive pack in various carrier oils built for a longer life. 12K-15K-25k (max) or 1 year.
