Amazon set to lay off thousands in Washington state

I’ve said many times over the years here on BITOG that Amazon bought too many companies. They lost focus, had too much corporate bloat and management. Layer and layers of useless management getting paid big money to do very little. Too many companies under the Amazon umbrella.

Article says 14,000 layoffs in the very near future.

I've applied for a few Amazon jobs and their assessment tests were always to me ridiculous and weird. The sort of absorbed alot of areas. Who would have thought they'd be running servers.

Amazon announced today it’s closing all of its Amazon fresh stores the end of January 2026, except in California, which is delayed two months because of California law requiring notice to the workers.

Also note announced today UPS is laying off 30,000 more workers because they are cutting ties to Amazon.
UPS also laid off 48,000 last year

UPS is dropping Amazon. There is no profit in residential deliveries.

Consumer sentiment, and summarily demand, is declining outside of the top income earners. Companies have been resorting to decreasing headcounts to improve operating margins to make up for areas where they expect to see, or have already seen, decline. It's only going to get worse, in my opinion.

Massive layoffs is such a cyclic thing with these large corps now...

How many people work for Amazon? (2025 data)

Amazon employs approximately 1.56 million full- and part-time workers worldwide as of early 2025, according to the company’s latest quarterly reports and financial disclosures. This figure represents a 2.3% increase from the previous year, marking a recovery from the workforce reductions that followed Amazon’s pandemic-era hiring surge.

Numbers at a glance

  • 1.56 million – Total global workforce (Q1 2025)
  • 1.1 million – U.S.-based employees (70% of total workforce)
  • 250,000 – Additional seasonal workers hired for 2024 holiday season
  • 2.3% – Year-over-year workforce growth in 2025
  • 1.61 million – Peak employment reached in 2021
  • $18/hour – Minimum wage for all seasonal employees
  • 15% – Average pay increase over three years for retained employees

I've ordered a lot of stuff from Amazon in the last 2 months and rarely have they been delivered in the time frame promised. I ordered a coolant surge tank for my Focus that promised 2 day delivery and it took 2 weeks. I was away from home by then and had to have my neighbor watch for the delivery. I'm canceling Prime after my subscription expires...you can still get free delivery by spending $35. If I need something that cost less I have my kids order it.

Amazon is always laying off and hiring. From my memory they mandate like 5% layoff (or unregretted attrition, aka they don't mind you leaving or they firing you) a year typically on all level. Since it is harder than usual to find jobs now they just decide to make it a layoff instead of let you leave on your own.

Hasn't there also been a large push in Washington state to tax the bejesus out of 'high flying' companies in that state?
Realistically many major corps get sweet tax deals to locate there and ones with intense profits don’t barely pay a dime to local tax base while straining.i get it to attract them however there should be timelines on these sweet deals.
