Amazon return at UPS store

Today I tried to return a brand new hockey stick and the only alternative was the UPS store, not Kohls.

When I went to drop it off the owner had a scowl and said I can’t accept that, it needs a box. I said but this is the way it came. He said no dice.

What’s the deal? If I google there are a gazillion stories and seems to say UPS stores despise Amazon returns. I didn’t argue I said otay!

I was thinking maybe it’s the size/length of the hockey stick? I went to another UPS store (we have 3 within a 3 mile radius) and no problem.

Is this like a parking space. Sometimes when there’s a confrontation, the driver won’t try to park there ever again? Just curious what happened, what the guy’s problem was. He seems to be ok with selling packing services and $28 ground labels to elderly folks.

So maybe one is best off requesting all items ship in an additional box from Amazon cuz what would I be able to do, buy a box and have this guy charge me?

Why would you go back??
The only reason is convenience. It’s next to my gym and along everyday routes. But the one I went to instead, is always friendly just less convenient. Supposed to pay for parking too.

He was trying to scam you by trying to get you to buy a box you did not need so he could make money. Amazon pays for the freight when the ups store scans the barcode you present them and compensate the store. Hence why the next place didn't give you a hard time. Go ahead and write up a bad review detailing this blatant scam to others.

From google

The UPS Store will pack, label, and ship returns for free if customers provide a return shipping code from Amazon. Customers can show the code to a UPS employee. For extra-large or heavy items, Amazon may provide a postage due label or the seller may provide a prepaid label. A package is considered extra large or heavy if it weighs more than 90 lbs, is longer than 96 inches, or has a total length and girth of more than 130 inches.

Amazon offers a free option for customers to return items. Amazon may charge a $1 fee for UPS returns if there is a closer drop-off option, such as a Whole Foods, Kohl's, or Amazon Fresh location. This fee is intended to reduce return costs and encourage customers to use other drop-off locations.

My local UPS is wild in regards to Amazon returns. There’s no less than 20 signs, posters and warnings plastered all over the walls related to Amazon.

I do all my Amazon returns at Kohls. They just scan your code and you walk away. No boxes or hassle, ever. They even give you a coupon to shop at kohls on your way out.

I do prefer Kohls but with this item they were not a choice. I do get it’s not convenient, the stick barely fits in my car and is more suited to the wife’s suv.

What I mean is who likes bulky items, but it is an Amazon return…maybe it’s like when you ask for a napkin and some restaurants give you just one, they don’t like it 😂

I did an Amazon return at our local Kohls.
It literally took less than 1 minute.
Handed her the item and the code
She scanned it and handed me a receipt with a Kohls coupon.
Easier than returning something purchased at Kohls.

When selecting UPS for Amazon returns, you have to pay attention because there are usually multiple options.

One option is you pack and box and they'll print the label at the UPS store.

Another option is you bring the bare item and they'll pack, box and label it.

This is why I choose either the Kohl's or Staples option because they handle everything.

Take the hockey stick and jam it into one of those drop boxes with the label taped around it. The delivery driver will understand.

I do all my returns at UPS store, for the times I was forced to do Kohl's, I had to walk all the way to the back of the store and wait in line.

UPS store is closer for me and usually in an out in 1min. Never an issue

My local UPS store is very nice. They have a very large box for Amazon returns. I show up, they scan my phone's barcode, they take my package and throw it in the big box. Amazon refunds me a short time later.
Sounds like my experience every time. Right near my main grocery store. No hassle returns

UPS stores are franchised. You ran into a bad apple.

For me, UPS store is five minutes away. Whole Foods ten minutes. Kohl's twenty minutes. Latter two involve fighting traffic or busy parking lots, vs. quiet strip mall.

No brainer in that respect, but the UPS store is also quick and easy. If nobody is being helped, I literally put the package on their scale, barcode scanned, receipt prints and I'm outta there is 30 seconds or less. Post holidays, I've seen the store piled up with returns, and they never have an issue accepting them.

Amazon indicates whether they want the item (re)packaged during the RMA process. Even when they don't, I put it back in the original packaging it was sent in, to reduce the risk of any potential damage when thrown into bulk return shipment bin. Amazon's returns processing is lax, if not absent entirely, but I don't leave that to chance.

For most items, credited are issued after Amazon receives notice that the item is in their chain of custody. Process couldn't be any easier, but I try to not abuse it.

In the past, returns were handled as individual shipments, but it's all bulk now. The tracking number issued is essentially meaningless and doesn't progress beyond the dropoff time.

Sounds like the store (owner) employee got up on the wrong side of the bed. Perhaps a past negative experience caused him to say no.

I'm finding out that this type of customer service isn't unusual these days. I personally would avoid that store no matter how convenient. In other words, reward those stores that take care of you with your time and money. That is the only thing these businesses understand. Unfortunately.

I do all my Amazon returns at the UPS Store as well. Most times, I don't even have to repack the item. As long as it's in the original product box.

The pile of Amazon returns is staggering. Looks like a 1/4 scale model of Mt. Everest.

Usually use Whole Paycheck as it’s five minutes away. UPS store in town is technically closer, but opposite any other shopping I do so it’s out of the way.
The options for returns get weird occasionally. Once I had to go to the Amazon warehouse 12 miles away.

Exactly this. I'm sure they make pennies on each return so when they see someone coming in with an Amazon return they do their best to make that person's life miserable. I avoid small family stores and franchises for this very reason.

Yes the owner makes all the difference. Our local store went from terrible to just not-good.

I refuse to use them for anything other than Amazon returns. There's an Office Depot steps away where you can ship UPS and I'll do that if needed.
