To make a long story short, and I can't do the story any justice, these guys building the engine noticed some #'s on the crankshaft and had somehow detremined that the engine wasn't the 5.3L they thought it was. It was a 4.8L. This made the story more exciting!!!

I don't remember what vehicle these guys put the engine in nor do I remember much of the whole story but, It'd sure be an interesting read!

I think you are talking about the Hot Rod article where they took a 4.8L and attempted to see if they could break it. They made something like 900HP with it and it stayed together.

Yeah, but I'm not knocking it or saying they should have used a Ford engine, LOL!

Couldn't remember the details. Just found this:

Quote:
4.8
118 octane race gas
Twin 76mm eBay turbos
Cam
Ported heads
Arp head studs
Fast Intake and throttle body
26.8 psi for 1,203 hp!!! Still didnt go boom...

Apparently they increased the ring-gap as well.

Impressive nonetheless, though I wonder how long it would hold up in a setting that isn't dyno?

We also have to keep in mind these are engine dyno numbers, not SAE NET.

Ah, you folks know the article! I didn't read it so, I don't have any of the actual details

I'm glad that I brought it up.

Dunno? They opined that it would last all season at those power levels, because they made over 60 pulls. I'd imagine that if they turned the wick down a bit and ran a conservative tune to avoid detonation, then I'm sure it'd live a long and happy life.

Quite right. And it could be tuned to run on 93 octane (this was 118 octane race gas) as well, which would bring the power level down significantly.

That's the one I linked! They were trying to find the limits of the LS...and discovered that 1200HP isn't it! IIRC, it was a van engine. More than 4hp/ci from a 100,000+ mile junkyard shortblock.

Wonder what it could do running E85...

Good question! They should have tried that IMHO!

Also, if they really wanted it to fail, they could have added some detonation in there, LOL!

It would be a monster!

Like Overkill I am a fan of the late LS7, it's just the most compact little package ever! When you see one on the stand you just won't believe the little Mouse is such a MONSTER.

I have a 6.0 LS truck long block (iron) on the stand right now, and the more I look at my 05 Silverado 5.3 the more I'm thinking transplant!
