don't forget that none of the other technologies have black levels as good as CRT though...I just hope that the difference is not that big..the newer LCD's and plasmas are supposed to have blacks that are close to CRT levels...

on a side note:
when I watched some LCD TVs yesterday at Cc, the Toshibas looked very nice, natural, and the Samsungs looked gaudy, unnatural and more "in your face" colors (I'm sure with some calibration, they can look better, but i prefer the "softer" natural skin colors that both Tosh and JVC displayed)...
the JVCs also looked great! i'm only weary about JVC this time, 'cause they haven't been in the news much...like they just gave up the fight...their upcoming line for 2008 is supposed to be something special, though...we'll see. They're kinda pricey compared to Tosh.
in my case, it will be a fight betw. Panasonic, Toshiba and JVC.
(Sony? no. overpriced junk, which offer the least bang/features for the buck, [censored] warranty, and didn't look any better than any other brand, and possibly worse than the Tosh and JVC)

I must say the "glossy" finish, which i saw on Toshibas, and some others, like Samsung did reflect a lot of ambient light and all kinds of movements, and it was distracting...
Looked great when the TV was off, but i can totally see it being a nuisance when watching a movie...
Hopefully their newer lines will have matt-black. The JVCs, which were matt, looked great when on.

That's strange. In general, LCD screens are supposed to be much better than plasmas at controling ambient light reflections. I guess there are different types of LCD screens out there, too.

This light reflection is one issue that keeps me away from plasmas, although some more expensive plasmas have special light reflection-reducing screens just for that purpose and apparently they help quite a bit.

I knew what you meant. What were they thinking? Glossy black? DUH! My HP PC monitor is the same way. Nothing a little electrostatically attrached dust won't solve.
