I have a 05'Subaru Forester X.There is a TSB stating that only genuine Subaru coolant and conditioner should be used.States that corrosion,and damage could occur.The Subaru brand is phosphate(non amine type)specially formulated for aluminum.Knowing that their coolant and Subaru's additive has to be manufactured by someone else anyway,anyone know of brand sold that would be and equilvalant to the dealer brand?How important is the conditioner additive?Are there any available at a parts store that I could get if it is important?Thanks

Hmm, NAPA regular green coolant is phosphate, low silicate, non-OAT coolant. It states that it is designed for aluminum. I just replaced coolant in my Kia with it and will do Isuzu (aluminum engine and radiator) next week. Both dealers told me to use regular green coolant.
I do not see why it would not work for you. Buy an add pack and mix it with NAPA. Coolant is $10 per gallon.

The Subaru stuff is Holts Radweld, an English product similar to Bar's Leak. The bottle is identical, except for the Subaru label.

Thanks.It does look exactly like the Subaru stuff.From what I'm rading on the Subaru forums the additive is a "quick fix" due to a lot of head gasket problems.As best as I cn tell by 05' problem has been fixed.
I've got an '04 Outback & am getting ready to change my coolant so i'm in the same boat as you...except my dealer charges even more (~$19/gal for the 50/50 stuff).
I doubt i'll use the additive as I have the H6, but i'd sure like to know my options other than OEM stuff that I can use w/o worrying!

Yesterday I went to AAP to stock up on the PP for $5/qt. & pick up some Pureone filters. While I was there I noticed they had Prestone Extended Life antifreeze (full-strength) on sale for $7.99/gal. I looked on the back & it stated "silicate free", etc. & "Ethylene Glycol"...which is what my owners manual states to use (mixed w/distilled water for a 50/50 max blend) if i'm not using OEM (~$25/gal for 50/50 blend) stuff.
So...is this stuff basically the same as OEM? Would OEM use any "secret ingredients" to make a difference?
I don't have a problem using OEM stuff IF they can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt why anything else is bad.

2008 Kia Spectra (built in Korea) and 2002 Isuzu Axiom with Japanese engine and GM transmission.

Silicates are always bad for Japan-built water pumps. Avoid at all costs. Phosphate is selected by Japanese car builders because they say it protects aluminum better than other anti-corrosion additives.
Buy the OE stuff, or see if Honda charges less for their coolant. From what I can see, Honda coolant is also a non-silicate phosphated coolant without 2-EH

I called the Subaru dealer (again!) & asked if the 50/50 was all he had. He stated he had some full-strength AF, but it was for the older cars...I assume it's the green stuff. He said the 50/50 was for the newer cars & it was blue & had the conditioners already pre-mixed into it.
I may break down & buy the OEM full-strength stuff as it'll work out to about the same price as 2 gallons of the Zerex Asian formula which is a 50/50 mix.
I'd like to flush it since I don't know what's in there now & how long it's been in there, but can't bring myself to pay $150 to the dealer to do it.

After reading through about 25 pages of green/blue/yellow/orange anti-freeze information I decided to throw in the towel and go to the dealer. I got a gallon of concentrate for 17.95. Considering my time as free, I now have two gallons of 50/50 mix for 8.98 a gallon.
Now, I can move on to worrying about other things.
BTW: it's sort of a green ... with maybe a blue tint. Or perhaps its more of a grayish tint. I think I over-analyze.
