Hi all. I'm writing this as a reminder to be safe on the roads.

Today I was on my way to visit my sister in Deland,FL. I was traveling on I4 and was about 15 miles from my destination. I was making a lane change and out of no where a conversion van came right next to me. My reaction was to steer back to the lane I came from. I must have oversteered because I heard my tires squeeling and felt like I was starting to lose control. I turn the wheel back to the left and the next thing I know I'm crossing 2 lanes and heading for the guard rail and after hitting the guard rail my car spun and the rear bumper hit the rail. Everything happened so quick that I can't even recall whether oncoming traffic was avoiding me or I was lucky enough to cut through a section with no cars. I hit the guard rail and the airbags didn't deploy so maybe I managed to slow the car down enough before hitting the railing. I'm just very, very, very grateful to be sitting here writing this. I4 is extremely busy and I was on it during rush hour. If someone t-boned me I would have been toast. I have some minor bodyaches that will need to be checked out, but like I said I'm extremely lucky. This experience definitely is one of the scariest I've had so far.

Surprisingly the Civic can still be driven. The front is messed up and the rear bumper is cracked. It also makes funny noises, vibrates, and the alignment is way off. Now I have to deal with insurance, which is sad since I just filed a claim for a hit and run 3 months ago. Might post pics tomorrow.

Anyways, my point is stay safe. There are a lot of idiot drivers out there. I'm sure whoever was in the conversion van didn't even see me or noticed I was trying to avoid hitting him/her.

Johnny said it. 10 years from now you're going to care less about a few less trinkets in your stash. The car can be repaired. Sewing your head back on after it's been detached is much more difficult. Hug someone you care about ..and try to do it every time you see them. Now you know how close you are to being denied the opportunity.

Glad you made it OK. I think I am more likely to die on the road than when I have fished commercially in Bristol Bay. And that is supposed to be dangerous..........

My Daughter seems to have run ins with other people doing stupid things fairly often. Especially with big rigs. She called me yesterday in tears about a semi that was trying to change lanes into her.

She said she could clearly see his face in the mirror as he was doing it.

after a semi changed lanes into me last year, causing me to spin out of control on the interstate. I guess he thought he could get behind me but he bumped or pushed my left rear quarter panel and spun me around at 70 mph. Whenever I see one, I fly by them.

Yeah, the car can be replaced. I know someone was watching over me.

I had to drive the car all the way back from Deland to Tampa. My brave little sister followed behind me and we were doing 50 mph. All the faster cars and semis were running up behind her. I'm definitely giving her a hug when she comes back.

Yes one person stopped immediately to see if I was okay.

The cop that came was nice about. Told me to file a delayed accident form instead of having him report it since he'll have to ticket me if he did it.

I'm glad you're ok.

Now your Civic is exactly like 90% of the other Civics on the road today.

I hope nobody here still uses dial-up

Pics:

those cars are doing 50-65+ mph. I went from the lane left of the exit only to the other side of the road

Typically, that's code for "get the *bleep* out of the way already!"

Is your daughter an attentive driver, or does she tend to drone about forgetting about people around her (especially large commercial vehicles)? I'll "squeeze" the white line if some idiot doesn't get out of my blind spot within a reasonable amount of time (provided there's actually somewhere for him to go, of course).

Cutehumour:

Far in front or far behind, that's what we commercial drivers prefer!

I sometimes wonder how good she pays attention....Not as good as an expert like myself.

But I think she does a pretty good job driving.

She said that she had just gotten on the on ramp to the freeway. She said that he threw on his signal and just started moving over real quick. Like I said she said she saw his face in the mirror.

I am sure there are some semi drivers that get their kicks out of startling women drivers. Maybe he was one of them.

Thanks for the reminder on staying away from the trucks. I probably linger too much myself. I do try to get by the trucks fairly quickly.

Wow, glad to hear you are OK. That damage isn't too bad.

I drive all the time on the FL Turnpike and all I can say is that we got some of the worst drivers. I notice drivers have absolutely ZERO courtesy for other people on the road.

And due to the poverty wages the state pays the Florida Highway Patrol, there is a shortage of 300 Troopers patroling I-75, I-95, Turnpike and I-4

A ticket for what!? Here, unless there is property damage you won't be getting a ticket for anything (we're assuming nothing was observed by a cop to warrant a ticket).

Alex.
