The core 2 duo processor is old news.

I would skip the i3, the i5 and i7 are kick-posterior!
The i7 is an absolutely killer CPU. Best suited to very demanding CPU intensive environments . . . and those with deeper wallets. We have a Xeon version in our home server, and it has been completely unflappable.
But honestly, for most folks, a higher clock speed Core2 is still plenty of horsepower. The hard-core gamer is still better advised to spend the big dollars on the GPU, and not the CPU.
Getting back to the OP, tying a bunch of peripherals into a laptop makes for a cluttered mess. You're better off just getting a minitower at that point. At least you put the latter on the floor.
If it doesn't have to be mobile, an AIO system is a better choice over a laptop. Spend some time with an iMac - they're plenty durable. Otherwise, I'd rather sit at a table with an A600 over a Thinkpad.

For that matter a lower speed Core2 has plenty of power for my needs and I do play games, have a previous gen ATI card, HD4850. I can play Crysis at good framerates at 1680x1050. Well ok I don't know exactly what the framerate is, as I haven't tested it, but the game seems smooth and the graphics are pretty amazing.
I suppose for those people who are worried about 3Dmark Vantage scores my machine would hardly be noteworthy, but in my case I just don't think a Core i7 is really required. The only argument that really speaks in favor of the newer stuff is power consumption, my overclocked E2200 and 4850 use a lot of power and create a lot of heat. I cleaned out the fan as best I could for the time being (with compressed air cleaner) and it seems to be running cooler.
It is still fairly loud though, comparatively...
I've changed the hard drive out once since I have had it, so I don't think the new one is old enough to be wearing out yet. The OE hard drive definitely made noise as it was going out.
