It was announced yesterday that Airtex in Fairfield will be shipping out, not fuel pumps, but jobs--to Mexico and China. An expected total of 275 of the 350 jobs that are LEFT after the last couple of decimations of jobs at the business (160 in late 2013, and several hundred back in 2006) are going to be done away with, this beginning this September and ending a year later.
new (and really, ever-changing) ownership of the once-exclusively locally-owned business (Airtex) is to blame as well. The latest incarnation of the "parent company" of Airtex is UCI-Fram. Over the years since we've been covering the area it's been more than we can remember. And it's nearly always been an all-out assault on the employees over that 12-year period of time.
This doesn't bode well for Fairfield as a town. Airtex has always been the city's largest employer. Other manufacturing businesses have been covertly "run out" by the powers-that-be over the years in order to not take from the Airtex work pool. Many people we know who live in Fairfield are commuting to Albion to work at manufacturing businesses in those locations (Champion labs)
“It’s a very tough situation,” said Keith Zar, vice president of UCI-Fram, the parent company of Airtex. “But this is a very tough market. The bulk of operations will be moved out of Fairfield starting in September.”
UCI-Fram officials said the move will not impact Champion Laboratories in Albion, Illinois, another UCI-Fram company.
“Employment there stands at between 1,200 and 1,500,” Zar said. “The decision to move Airtex jobs will have no impact on Champion Labs.”
Champion Labs is one of the nation’s largest manufacturers of automotive filters.
New-Zealand-based Rank Group, a private investment company, purchased UCI-Fram from the Carlyle Group for a reported $980 million in 2011. The firm’s brands include Airtex, Wells, ASC and Champ, Prestone and Autolite
Another once great company falls. Now what is funny is at one time they sent mechanical fuel pump production to Mexico.... then brought it back to the U.S.
This is the nail in the coffin to a once great company. They also produce the the fuel pump in the military hum-vee and predator drone. Another blow to the UAW, the workers, and the community.
