It was announced yesterday that Airtex in Fairfield will be shipping out, not fuel pumps, but jobs--to Mexico and China. An expected total of 275 of the 350 jobs that are LEFT after the last couple of decimations of jobs at the business (160 in late 2013, and several hundred back in 2006) are going to be done away with, this beginning this September and ending a year later.

new (and really, ever-changing) ownership of the once-exclusively locally-owned business (Airtex) is to blame as well. The latest incarnation of the "parent company" of Airtex is UCI-Fram. Over the years since we've been covering the area it's been more than we can remember. And it's nearly always been an all-out assault on the employees over that 12-year period of time.

This doesn't bode well for Fairfield as a town. Airtex has always been the city's largest employer. Other manufacturing businesses have been covertly "run out" by the powers-that-be over the years in order to not take from the Airtex work pool. Many people we know who live in Fairfield are commuting to Albion to work at manufacturing businesses in those locations (Champion labs)

“It’s a very tough situation,” said Keith Zar, vice president of UCI-Fram, the parent company of Airtex. “But this is a very tough market. The bulk of operations will be moved out of Fairfield starting in September.”

UCI-Fram officials said the move will not impact Champion Laboratories in Albion, Illinois, another UCI-Fram company.

“Employment there stands at between 1,200 and 1,500,” Zar said. “The decision to move Airtex jobs will have no impact on Champion Labs.”

Champion Labs is one of the nation’s largest manufacturers of automotive filters.

New-Zealand-based Rank Group, a private investment company, purchased UCI-Fram from the Carlyle Group for a reported $980 million in 2011. The firm’s brands include Airtex, Wells, ASC and Champ, Prestone and Autolite

Another once great company falls. Now what is funny is at one time they sent mechanical fuel pump production to Mexico.... then brought it back to the U.S.

This is the nail in the coffin to a once great company. They also produce the the fuel pump in the military hum-vee and predator drone. Another blow to the UAW, the workers, and the community.

When were they a great company? There fuel pumps are junk.

But, but...the shareholder gets a few more dollars for a fancy steak dinner and the CEO gets a bonus to buy another private jet.... that's all that matters right?

They are merely competing with the new segment leader..Chinese made/Canada based Spectra Premium.

That is the "giant sucking sound"....

The race to the bottom of the barrel all so a few get even richer, even if they destroy developed nations in the process.

Under the Leadership of UIS Inc., a private company with a taste for acquisitions, had quietly created a small industrial empire of 14 companies under the leadership of Harry Lebensfeld.

...Lenbensfeld passed, UIS operated as a trust, the only remaining daughter actioned UIS and then sold to the Carlyle Group in 2003. The Carlyle Group. raped the Airtex company, first, sending the Water pumps to ASC China plant, and just pillaged the Airtex brand with QC issues, poor management(Carlyle was calling the shots, unlike UIS) then racked up millions in warranty claims. Carlyle only started to invest when they were planning to sell, by that time the Airtex name got a bad rap. and bad product was all over the market. Once the Carlyle group put some money into Airtex, they turn around and sold it off to Rank Group.

The Good days of this company were the days of the mechanical fuel pump, since Airtex had developed a very good patented diaphragm.

Exactly. This system stinks and needs to fall.

Agreed.
I now tell people time and time again, if you/I are dropping a tank for a pump, your buying a OEM entire tank unit.

Motorking's inbox will be filled with angry letters now!

Luckily, they still rebox some OE parts from Europe and Japan.

Isn't this closed factory mainly for the the poor designs they had to redesign?

More good news is that you can often search the Airtex part number on eBay and find the country of origin.

I lost a good job in 2004 to the same nonsense. The crazy thing is these companies don't care if they destroy the whole country as long as a few VIPs stuff their pockets with money they stole from the middle class.

X2.

I don't know the history of Airtex, but if they were a great company, it was a long time ago.

Their fuel pumps have been questionable for a while now. I would not use an Airtex pump/hanger unless the OE pump/hanger was either astronomically expensive (double the labor cost or what I feel my labor is worth on the job), or flat out unavailable.

LOL! It's part of the NA biz culture + mentality, bowing down to the ever-demanding (yet distorted) consumerism market (which perpetually demanding low, low cost and suffer along with quality as well......)

I've been to some other countries where customer mentality are totally different: they want the best (and pay for them accordingly) and they get the best, pricing is only secondary/tertiary in their scheme of things.

So don't blame the South Americans + china in terms of selling you cheep stuff, for you asked for it.

That leads to the flourishing of biz such as dollar general, etc. which sells nothing but junk out on the market and still able to be profitable to the point of becoming IPO....

go figure.

Q.

Yuppers on that, my pal warned me to never use anything labeled airtex. He installed a airtex pump in a customers caravan and warned the guy he should of gone with a Mopar pump, customer supplied the Airtex. 1 week later van comes back, dead pump. Friend replaces it again and charges for the labor, customer is [censored] but uses another airtex. 2 weeks later, van comes back, charges him a final time but customer wises up and uses a Mopar pump:) This was about 7 years ago, so airtex must of been good at making junk!

Consumer Reports, of all publications, claims that Mexicans "moving" here are buying cars made in Mexico once they get here, out of "loyality". (Mazda is cited) So, they come here, take jobs from citizens, and then cause MORE jobs to be shipped to Mexico. And WE want MORE of this?

Too bad to hear that another US auto parts plant is moving south of the border. Sorry to hear about those folks losing their jobs with no decent-paying ones coming up.
