Depends upon the carrier.
Southwest and Alaska don't have seatback screens at all. Of course Allegiant and Frontier don't either.
American has removed them from its domestic fleet but they remain on the widebodies and may return to the single aisles.
United is adding them to more of its fleet as is Delta with both already having them widely installed.

It’s not about the airplane or the airplane manufacturer.Regardless - and lacking that PM data - the initial cost is astronomical - and then PAX watch their iPad …
That’s why I mentioned brand new planes not showing up with them anymore …
What gets me is people that can watch anything on an iPhone - but thousands do … Sure allot of eyeglasses advertised these days too
It’s about what the airline specifies when they get the interior fitted out.

I was flying American yesterday. First flight was Anchorage to Dallas. A pretty long flight. Pretzels, two small cookies and one soda and no inflight we entertainment.

Yeah you might recall the note about the pilot on the brand new UA 321 I rode 1D on - it had them.
BA and LH are not putting them in - I’m on 5 hour flights after my UA/LH/BA transatlantic runs … no screens … Brand new planes often
I wish folks would quit explaining that aircraft stuff - way out of context - have travelled for a living since 1991 and always had a great deal of interest in the equipment …
I work on them for a living. I don’t need data. IFE is a high priority item. If there are any screens inoperative they are fixed ASAP as it’s a big deal for customer satisfaction. Of course being items that receive wear and tear from thousands of pax doesn’t mean it doesn’t break. Atleast where I’m at routinely the IFE system is inspected for functionality. This includes PED power, audio jacks, screen for every single seat. Regardless it’s very reliable. It’s been years since I’ve have to defer a whole system inoperative. Brand new planes are not just dropping IFE. IFE screens were dropped in AA on narrow body planes and is now thinking of bringing it back. DAL and UAL never dropped it. Many carrier like Jet Blue have always and continue to have them. The planes come configured as the operators request them when ordering. There’s a reason some of the big big airlines airlines charge a premium. Customers are willing to pay more for a better experience like IFE & WiFi. Take a look at AA earnings. They have tanked. Wish the US airlines would spend the money on better food and beverages …
Most of the work I do needs 3270 access to IBM 370 type of mainframe. Hard to download a mainframe!!
I think the issue is with people so used to and addicted to screens they don't know what to do if deprived of screen time for longer than 30 mins. Especially kids, most kids.
Personally, I see no need for entertainment on flights under or around 4hrs at all. But light snack would be nice.
It's flights over 10hrs that need those electronic pacifiers for both kids and adults, and decent food.
I normally sleep most of the flight even if it's one longer than 10hrs.
