Airplane in-flight entertainment - the new norm?

Gone are the video screens built into the seat backs. Now there is a little holder for your tablet or smart phone so you can provide your own entertainment.

The meals on domestic flights disappeared years or decades ago

What's next?
What airline?

Some airlines are adding those and making certain every seatback has one.

Customer satisfaction goes up with in seat entertainment.

Some airlines are committed to customer satisfaction.

Depends upon the carrier.
Southwest and Alaska don't have seatback screens at all. Of course Allegiant and Frontier don't either.
American has removed them from its domestic fleet but they remain on the widebodies and may return to the single aisles.
United is adding them to more of its fleet as is Delta with both already having them widely installed.

Regardless - and lacking that PM data - the initial cost is astronomical - and then PAX watch their iPad …
That’s why I mentioned brand new planes not showing up with them anymore …
What gets me is people that can watch anything on an iPhone - but thousands do … Sure allot of eyeglasses advertised these days too 🤓
It’s not about the airplane or the airplane manufacturer.

It’s about what the airline specifies when they get the interior fitted out.

United’s newest airplane is the Airbus 321 XLR.

Take a look at the photographs, there is a big screen in the back of every seat, including all of economy

I was flying American yesterday. First flight was Anchorage to Dallas. A pretty long flight. Pretzels, two small cookies and one soda and no inflight we entertainment.

Yeah you might recall the note about the pilot on the brand new UA 321 I rode 1D on - it had them.
BA and LH are not putting them in - I’m on 5 hour flights after my UA/LH/BA transatlantic runs … no screens … Brand new planes often
I wish folks would quit explaining that aircraft stuff - way out of context - have travelled for a living since 1991 and always had a great deal of interest in the equipment …

False hundreds of thousands of hot meals are served daily on domestic flights.

I work on them for a living. I don’t need data. IFE is a high priority item. If there are any screens inoperative they are fixed ASAP as it’s a big deal for customer satisfaction. Of course being items that receive wear and tear from thousands of pax doesn’t mean it doesn’t break. Atleast where I’m at routinely the IFE system is inspected for functionality. This includes PED power, audio jacks, screen for every single seat. Regardless it’s very reliable. It’s been years since I’ve have to defer a whole system inoperative. Brand new planes are not just dropping IFE. IFE screens were dropped in AA on narrow body planes and is now thinking of bringing it back. DAL and UAL never dropped it. Many carrier like Jet Blue have always and continue to have them. The planes come configured as the operators request them when ordering. There’s a reason some of the big big airlines airlines charge a premium. Customers are willing to pay more for a better experience like IFE & WiFi. Take a look at AA earnings. They have tanked. Now are scrambling to bring back IFE.

Always be prepared for none of this stuff to work. It usually does, but it's not unheard of for the infotainment system to be down, Wi-Fi not working, charge port not working.

Fully charge your devices before the flight, download content to watch, if you plan to work during the flight, make sure what you need to do is downloaded in advance and can be done online.
Most of the work I do needs 3270 access to IBM 370 type of mainframe. Hard to download a mainframe!!

I think the issue is with people so used to and addicted to screens they don't know what to do if deprived of screen time for longer than 30 mins. Especially kids, most kids.
Personally, I see no need for entertainment on flights under or around 4hrs at all. But light snack would be nice.
It's flights over 10hrs that need those electronic pacifiers for both kids and adults, and decent food.
I normally sleep most of the flight even if it's one longer than 10hrs.

American Airlines use to have a nice magazine to read (American Way). It had some interesting articles. And they use to show one movie for everyone one a long flight.

The free earphones they hand out are only good for one movie. They hurt my ears beyond 2 hours.

I don't understand people who consume entertainment on flights. I just put in ear plugs, close my eyes and try to relax for the flight duration. Doing anything else is bizarre to me.

I used to work during flights but I realized the ROI for this is pretty low and it points to being disorganized.

6' 2" There is no getting comfortable enough in an airplane seat to do anything other than read a book or watch something on a screen. Working isn't an option, as my laptop won't fit on the tray in a way that allows me to comfortably use it, and I don't like the guy next to me reading my stuff.

Maybe I am too nice a guy, but I also don't lean my seat back more than 1 click. I hate people that lay their seat back into my face.

Books, magazines, etc. are how I make it through.

There might have been two movies on a transoceanic flight. But on a fairly small CRT in various locations.

I do remember the first time I flew first class. The seats had individual screens that popped out of the armrests. They had multiple channels that recirculated movies. It was amaz8ng compared to typical movies of the time.

I tried what you suggested. Wife wanted attention.

I am on a Southwest flight from Midway to Philadelphia. Several overhead bins are taped shut as they are broken.

I keep forgetting I need to lower my expectations with Southwest.
I flew on a Delta flight once that had the window duct taped on the inside. I did not have a lot of confidence and prayed quite a bit during that flight.

I get that it probably wasn't a big deal, but the optics were very bad.

Seat on last SWA flight had a broken reclining mechanism, so seat back didn't return to fully upright position.

Cabin crew doing pre-landing check was ready to give spiel, but then realized that it wasn't going to fix itself.

I'm glad I seldom fly domestically.

Cabin configuration is up to each airline. They choose the setup, suppliers, and decor.

That wasn’t the window - it was the shade.

Your choice -

1. cancel the flight while they remove the entire side panel to replace the broken shade.
2. Tape it and fix it later. You make it to your destination.

By the way - I’ll give you one guess - who do you think broke the shade? It wasn’t Delta.

Probably a winner like this in a new Airbus
