I usually make a mess and drip oil all over, get it on me etc.

I just did the perfect change. Oil hit the pan perfect, no mess. Filter came off without oil everywhere. And when I filled the 6.5 gallon sump in my Volvo...using 5 gallon jugs...I hit the top of the fill mark on my first try. I just doesn't get any better than that. Plus, I just hit 350K miles!

I changed my oil yesterday and got only one paper towel dirty in the process. It was a good day.

I started holding up the plastic drain pan to just under the engine as I unscrew the drain plug then let it down adjusting for the force of the flowing oil, how far out it goes (and wind). Makes less of a mess this way.

BTW - I find dog food bags opened up to the best thing to put under the drain pan. They have a waxy coating on the inside paper and do a better job than newspaper.

No matter how many I do or how careful I am I always end up using at least three large trees worth of paper towels. The spill always happens somewhere. If it is not under the car (like yesterday) when I pour the oil from the drain pan to the jug, I spill something. I have probably spilled more oil than the Exxon Valdez in my yard. Fat clumsy hands.

The Bobcat I just bought has a hose you lift out and open the end into a waste oil container. You do not even need a drain pan, right to the container.

Has anyone ever figured out where the missing almost quart of oil is? I drain slightly more than 5 QTs of oil from my Jeep, including draining the filter. Almost nothing is spilled. The dipstick was full before I started. I then add 6 QTs. Happens every time. Some is coating the media of the filter and some was on my hands and now is on a paper towel.

Yep! That's why I'm going to change the oil in my Corvette at the end of this week. It's my last week of summer vacation, so I won't be in a rush to get it done like I would if I did it on a weekend and had lots of other stuff to do. And then I can also drive the sample to Wearcheck the same day I change the oil too. It worked out perfectly actually, since my oil life monitor is sitting at 3% right now, so by the end of this week it will probably be close to zero.

no, its a 98 S70 2.5 N.A. It takes about 6.5 quarts of oil. I buy two 5 quart jugs for an OCI. I burn about 1 quart every 2,500 miles. Usually, when I fill it, i'm guessing how much of the second jug I need and topping off a few times till it's at the full mark. I do 10K OCI's.

You mean quarts, I'm sure. I've got the same engine. Hold 7 qts or so. You buy 2 5 quart jugs.

No, I bought it with 97K on it. I drive about 40K/year with about 75% highway miles. As far as I can see on the receipts, the previous owner ran QS dino in it. I ran it to 250K on Supertech and PYB (7,500 OCI's). From there it has been M1, Castrol or Shell synthetic with 10K OCI's. I'm about to go back to dino w/10K oci's given the burnoff. I need to get 400K on this then I'm ready to change.

My '05 Buick Century oil filter is in an aweful place for removal - no matter what I do oil spills out every where ...

Now that I use a Fumoto Quick Drain Valve and know about the 2-liter trick for the oil filter, I hardly ever get a drop of oil anywhere. Having a car that takes exactly 5 quarts (after a long drain) helps too.

Hmmph! During my oil change this morning I managed to spill about 3/4 of a quart.

But,on the bright side at least I didn't drop anything in the drain pan this time.
