Gates hard parts don't have the best reputation among some people. They seem to do a lot of reselling of white-box Chinese parts.

I personally avoid Gates hard parts like waterpumps and pulleys.

The OEM ones are likely made in China too and no better. It's unfortunate that very little is quality made anymore.

GM for example had a 112K minimum life expectancy goal on all hard part replacements and AFAIK still do, Ford and the others have similar.
OE quality with few exceptions is superior to aftermarket inc water pumps. There are specialty companies that do do make superior products but you pay a superior price for them.

If it's easy to change and driven by the serp or a V belt, sure try a cheapo.

I would only to OE on one driven by the timing belt, too much to risk there especially if you have an interference engine.

100% correct - the aftermarket ones are usually offshore and often do not last the same amount of time as the OE part. I would only use the OE pump.

So new made in Japan or reman oem??

I'd get the new NPW pump. They supply Nissa, and Nissan makes good engines.

My Alero belt was driven by the serpentine belt yes. It was easy to change.

NPW is NOT a Nissan OEM. They are a good Japanese aftermarket brand though. Nissan uses Hitachi water pumps with either Hitachi or Unisia Jecs markings - you can get these as Paraut if you can find them.

I imagine you are old enough to remember the days when sometimes you sought out certain aftermarket brands because they had a reputation for being equal or better than OEM at reduced pricing.

How times have changed.

The Chinese waterpump I put in my adult daughter's now deceased Taurus lasted about 14 months before leaking. I had no other choice due to the circumstances.

Well, there is NO made in xxxx tag on the water pump. one of the marking has been grinded off. In general, the water pump looks well made. The belt is made in USA and the idler bearings and tensioner bearings are Koyo, made in Japan. There are few o-rings and seals in the kit. I am not sure where they go. I did not see oil pump seal/gasket in it, so ordered Felpro kit separately.

Absolutely! I started trade school in 1972 so i remember all the good brands. Standard, Blue Streak, Bendix, Perfect Circle, Delco Remy, Budd, Kelsey-Hayes, Sealed Power, Mellings, Borg Warner, TRW, A&P, Moog, Monroe, etc. All were USA manufacturers with very high OE quality or better, many are now Chinese junk or just low quality parts.

I can remember buying new Delco starter solenoids, brushes and bushings kits for GM starters for $10 then turning the armature down with a small hand crank cutter.
Pressing in new water pump bearings was common, bearing, seal and gasket $7 and 10 min work.

Cars today are more complex but in many ways the mechanics are not as good. Back then you learned how to rebuild parts, you knew how they worked and how to diagnose them. We rebuilt almost everything.
I was good with carbs, i still have a Rotunda service kit for the VV carbs and a set of jet reamers with depth gauges and can still rebuilt a QJet, AFB, 2bbl Webers, Pierburg and Stombergs from memory.
Because i kept up with the technology I have a lot of skills long forgotten like running a Sunnen in the car boring bar (not a hone) on old inline engines, i learned this from an old timer back then.

Talk about memory lane. LOL

I don't agree that it's not any better if it also happens to be made in China.

I don't think generic parts store parts will go through the same design, testing, and QC as OEM parts.

Some of them don't even fit properly on the car. lol

FWIW, I put on a Motorcraft pump this weekend that had a porous casting, and I installed a Murray pump from O'Reilly that isn't leaking.

I find better quality auto parts online at RockAuto and Amazon than I do at the local parts stores. Prices half the cost too.

You can buy good quality parts at local auto parts stores, you just have to order them. They don't stock them because very few people buy them.

They tell you what's available for order on their websites, but none of them had my Hitachi MAF sensor.
