I did a GOOGLE search on which Mercon V fluids were licensed by FORD (M5040901) and only found (2) brands; WM/ST and Castrol. With all the Mercon V fluids out there you would think more would be licensed by FORD. Or, did I miss some?

Mercon 5 is slowly becoming obsolete. Valvoline, as an example, used to have an officially licensed Mercon V product up until about 1 year ago. Now they just sell a product that says "For Mercon V applications", but it's not actually licensed by Ford anymore. By no means is it completely obsolete yet, but many Ford applications that previously called for Mercon V now call for Mercon LV which, also surprisingly, is extremely hard to find licensed in the aftermarket

It's been out for several years now too.

Fixed Or Repaired Daily.

So I've been told since moving to GM territory.

I have some Valvoline Mercon V left over from our old Aerostar.
I'd trade/give/sell it to you if you lived near to us.
Heck, I'd probably just give it to you, knowing you'd put it to good use.
This stuff seemed to be magic when I gave the Aero a pan drop/clean, filter change and refill with the four or so quarts it shed in the process.
The delayed engagement of reverse when cold was gone as was the 3-4 shift shudder.
The transmission was otherwise fine for the 176K we drove the van from new.

When I lived in FL my local Walmart had quite a bit on the shelves. But, back then I was getting such a good deal on MC from my friend whom worked for "FORD" that I just ignored the ST.

At least WM licences fluids.....the Chrysler ATF+4 and the Ford Mercon V,seems most everybody else boasts their fluid is superior and see no need for licencing...yet they never Prove that they can meet or exceed the spec.

It's a fairly common occurance that I've never understood. Since you're one of the ones who spell it like that I figured you could provide some insight why people do that.

Honestly, I don't. It's how I have always spelled it. Or, because I can?

when i had and F-150 and used Mercon V my ford dealer would sell me the motorcraft Mercon V just as cheap as i could buy valvoline or castrol at orielly's.

go to a dealer and see if they will price match the auto parts stores name brand Mercon V.

i bought motorcraft differential fluid and transmission fluids from the dealer. the guys at my local dealer treat me right and will usually sell me fluids for the same price or cheaper than i can buy M1/valvoline fluids at the chain stores.

It has been a LONG time since I saw any Super Tech Mercon V.

I've used a LOT of Valvoline Maxlife in the past for Mercon V applications, however after a considerable amount of reading I'm not convinced that it does a good job with the new thinner viscosity that they are now bottling.

That being said. I cleaned out a Pepboys in 2008 when the World Financial markets collapsed and they were closing up shop.
Last I checked I have 5 quarts of Pennzoil Mercon V.
A couple quarts of Castrol Mercon V.
2-3 quarts of Mobil 1 Multivehicle, that specifically state that it is rated for Mercon V.
And at least 2 quarts of the older Maxlife.

I've been trying to consilidate fluids as I find them, and put them in their appropriate places. But I keep finding stuff as I go through and clean things up.

One thing I have always done for "multi-vehicle" fluids, like Maxlife or Mobil 1, is add at least 1 bottle of Lubeguard Red.
Perhaps that is why I've never had an issue like some other folks that I've heard from.

What I find odd is that for all the companies that jumped on the DEX VI bandwagon, going to the effort to get license rights there, none of them seem to want to get the official Ford Mercon LV license. Why is that? I realize that many companies do have fluids that are recommended for LV applications, but I cannot seem to locate an aftermarket LV licensed product other than the official MotorCraft product. So the fact that Mercon V licensed products are harder to find is not suprising to me. I know my local WalMarts have it in spades.

BTW #1 - if "FORD" bugs some of you, then don't look at any of the cars and trucks from the 1970s - 1990s; Ford (the company) used "FORD" (the capitalized word) in big letters on many of their products for years, including the spelling on tailgaits, and trunk lids, and hoods, and grills, and literature, and parts boxes ... If I am not mistaken, the word "FORD" was/is a registered trademark of the official company, which is incorportated as "The Ford Motor Company" for official purposes. I've had several F-150 trucks that had "FORD" in big white letters on the tailgate. I had an older Granada that had "FORD" in big chrome letters on it. It was good enough for "Ford" to call itself "FORD" on it's products, just so you know ...

BTW #2 - what do BITOGers do when they reach the end of a sensible lube discussion? See BTW #1 above ...

The (2) nearest FORD dealerships are 52 and 56 miles away. One of them wants $6.76 per qt. and the other wants $5.99 per qt.
There are several NAPA's near me and they sell Valvoline and store brand.
O'Reilly's only sells Valvoline and AZ sells Castrol and Coastal. AAP and PB's are 52 miles away.
Living in the sticks has its disadvantages sometimes.
