This is a seemingly very well-built and sturdy chicken coop that has housed our 5 birds successfully for five years. A few weeks ago my wife saw a black bear running through the back yard. Today when she went out there to get eggs, she found this and all the chickens missing. He ripped the door apart leaving the hinges behind. My wife also found a large pile of scat next to the coop.

Ugh that sucks! I have 13 chickens myself. I've never seen any bears, but know they are in the area.
Raccoons are the bigger problem around here.
Racoons and Coyotes were problematic for us. One time we let the chickens out to free range and we came back to 14 dead chickens from a coyote. Part of the challenge of living with nature.

Likely some of your chickens my be back. A couple of wires around that coupe and a real strong weed burner may be your answer.

Dorgs can usually hear/smell/sense that level of activity out back.

I'm no scatologist but it looks like the bear had been eating chicken fricassee.
Your 5 year old chickens are still laying? I'm guessing production is down by half of what it was when they were 2 years old?
Do you need one if your a farmer and there harassing your livestock? I suppose every state is different?

Looks like a good excuse to get a pair of Great Pyrenees.
I thought we did! Lol... Never imagined he'd just pull the door off. That really was a very sturdy coop! Thick hardware cloth all around and really solid hardware on the doors with sturdy carabiners to lock everything up.
That's why I wrote what I did. Not making a joke! Very motivated

Caucasian Shepards were bred to defend livestock against wolves and bears. Gotta go feed Cuddles again.
Our crazy irresponsible neighbor breeds the two mentioned.
Well they certainly bark less than a Pyrenees. But they may eat you after they steal all your guns.
