I'm buying tires for my sons birthday. I asked him what he is looking for in a tire. All that he cares about is winter traction. This has to be acomplished with one set of tires, all seasons with good winter traction. We live in northeast Ohio. Car is a 2006 Montego with 215-60-17 tires. Tire guy recommended conti-procontact. I hear CS4 are also good.
Advice on tires for Sons car.

My Hankook H727 have performed very well in the snow. Consumer Reports rates them "very good" for snow traction and "good" for ice braking, and I agree with their assessment .
Which ProContact are they recommending? The EcoPlus has the same CR snow and ice ratings as the H727.

I've had good luck with Contis. Currently have the Ecoplus on the Corolla and the Extreme Contact DWS on the T5....great tires for my use, but not enough snow experience in Va Beach to make an informed recommendation in your case.
CS4 are downright dangerous in the snow. Horrible.

I'd look for us made Michelin for a premium tire, or Yokohama if looking to save a few bucks. If the primacy mxm4 is available, I'd go for it. I'd give him a rain check though, as Michelin should have a rebate for $70 soon.

Still using Goodyear Tripletreds. They're still ranked #1 by tire rack in it's category. Managed to get them with a buy 4 get one free sale and they also had a doubled rebate offer if you got the goodyear credit card. At the time I got mine, they had an $80 rebate so I got $160 back. They have a $60 rebate and will double to $120 now. They're great in the snow.
It depends on his budget (or yours) .
Both continental and Michelin make excellent all season expensive tires.
I have used both and had great results.
Hankook is the current best of the economy brands.Korean made quality.
Don't over look Cooper USA made tires. Good quiet tires.
Lots of private branded tires made by them.
I have uniroyal tiger paws and love them too.
Dunlops have gotten bad too.
Stay clear of Briggstone ,firestone, or any china made tire.
I have Kenda's on one car. Not great.

lets see, dad has an '05 Freestlye(basically the Wagon version of the Five Hundred, which is the Ford model that matches up to your son's car.) and Mom has an '09 Taurus (Same body, Different Drivetrain - Duratec 3.5l & Ford 6F trans, vs. the Duratec 3.0 & either a ZF CVT, or Asin 6Speed auto)
they have basically stayed with the factory tires on both.

I Put a set of Pirelli P4's on my Neon Last fall, after reading a glowing review of them on discount tire's site. guy in MI had 'em on his neon, and they worked so well in the MI snows, that he never felt the need to switch to his winter tires.

Few years back found an article showing what plant codes to look for in the DOT Code, to find Tires made By US Union(USW) Labor.
then i went online and looked 'em up. the listing (which was still up on var. "shop union" type websites as of last fall) is Several Years out of Date, as several of the codes now belong to Chinese Factories.

I put the Primacy MXM4 on my subaru this summer and they are DELICIOUS, (have not tried them in the snow ) but they don't come in the size I need.
The WRG2 are in XL (WRG2 SUV) only in this size. I'm not sure if it will matter on a car that does not require XL load tire. I,m assuming that there is more materiel in the tire. Would running them at 32 psi or so cause heat build up? Would they ride extra hard? I've used the WR and WRG2 before and they are good.

I have also heard that the triple treads are good in winter but are loud. Have you noticed noise from these?

Continental Pure Contact both are a 70k tire. They may not be the quietest tires but if you want the best traction on an all season those are my recommendations

They just changed the tread pattern from the previous design. The new ones seem a bit quieter than the old pattern. They also seem pretty smooth too, only had them on for a few thousand miles so far. Continental doesn't have sales very often. Maybe twice a year. I am a continental dealer and we find out about the sale maybe a week before it starts. Last sale they had was a gift card for Adidas shoes. (Terrible promotion in my opinion) they've had others that come with a GPS, kindle, cameras, etc.
