Add Techron or nah?

My Elantra owner's manual recommends using a fuel system cleaner every 7500 miles. My car is non-DI but has a GDI engine available. I mainly use TT gas, so should I still dump in a bottle of Techron?

My guess is this is more for the GDI engine but they only printed one manual and made it a blanket recommendation for CYA purposes.

I would just run TTier and not worry about the Techron. Or, keep it to once a year.

I'm a big believer in doing it in all vehicles regardless of how the fuel is managed. Once an oil change. I usually do the tank of gas just before an oil change.

Add it. Many people do not understand, even if someone uses TT gas exclusivly, some deposits will still form every single time the engine is ran.

Periodic cleaning with an additive containing PEA helps!

That's kind of how it's supposed to work. Deposits inevitably form, but the detergents are supposed to remove them. And if the detergent level is high enough, it the deposit rate should be negative until it reaches an equilibrium. Even when there are photos shown of an engine after a teardown, there will be some minimal deposits even with good quality detergent fuel being used.

However, not all TT treatment is the same. I know some go for the minimal level of detergents to meet the Top Tier testing requirements while others try to exceed that. Chevron, Shell, XOM, Costco all claim that they exceed the requirements by a bunch and that continued use of their fuel should be enough to remove existing deposits and not just maintain cleanliness.

I ran a tank of gasoline with a bottle of Techron in it one time. It deposited a white ash like substance on the spark plugs. I don't think I'll be using it anymore.

The Techron didn't do that.

It's probably the result of the engine burning off all the crud that the Techron is cleaning off of the backside of the intake valves.

You don't need it with top tier fuel if you drive regularly enough that you don't have old gas sitting in it creating varnish at a rate faster than the additives can clean it off. This also assumes you buy from a gas station with good sales, so they also get fresh gas frequently.
