Abrupt shift from 1st to 2nd gear

Yup, I'm fully expecting that line, and they'd actually be half right in this case.

When you first start driving (on a completely cold engine/trans), regardless if summer or winter, the trans seems to hold onto that 1st gear unusually long, and then somewhat violently/abruptly dumps it into 2nd gear. It only does it this one time. All the subsequent 1->2 shifts are smooth. I could come to a stop 5 seconds after that and then start moving again, and that next 1st --> 2nd shift will now be smooth.

None of the other automatic trans I've ever driven did anything like it, but my experience with automatics is rather limited in general, so I don't want to use this as a benchmark. I've asked on an audi forum, and it seems that about half of all Q5 owners experience this, and most just consider it normal. Is it? Is it just a matter of the transmission needing some movement of the parts to get the fluid circulating properly?

I can certainly bring it to the dealer's attention next time she goes in for service, but getting them to reproduce this issue is going to be the tough part.

All 3 of the 5hp19s I've had in a B5 A4/ B5 S4 and B6 A4 all do this for the first maybe second shift, I was told it holds the revs to warm the catalysts as well, next time you start the vehicle let it idle for 2-3 min before you go to see if it goes away, I always wait for the high idle to go away before I start driving and its not as noticable, in the wintertime however the car requires warming up for 5 or so minutes otherwise it does it for 5 or so blocks.

Classic line. Another classic is when a customer tells the service writer they're losing oil and there's no leaks. A smart service writer asks questions like, how much oil are you losing? Then he listens and bases his reply based on the answer. EG: I drop a qt of oil every 600 miles. Reply, that's normal, some even use a bit more. That works more often than not, unless it's a savvy customer. LOL

This is the point that I was trying to convey, I just didn't get the best words down on screen. The older Audis also used a secondary air injection pump for the first 30 seconds after a cold start to pump as much oxygen in the pre and main cats to get them up to operating temp faster. Same principle, most of the quirky behavior is usually driven by some emissions device.

Holding revs is one thing. Violently slamming into 2nd gear is another, IMO.

So again, we are not talking about the same thing. In our case, it can be the dead of winter with 10F outside. Even if you just start the engine and immediately go (no warmup idling), only the first 1>2 shift will be abrupt, but if you come to a stop 5 seconds later (not 5 blocks), the following 1>2 shift will be smooth.

I forgot to note that mine bangs into the 2nd as well, your situation does sound different, I'd park it at the Audi dealer like a previous post and let the service manager drive it first thing in the AM.

QP - Did you ever take the Q5 in for this? My Jeep which I believe has the same transmission does exactly the same thing. First 1-2 shift of the day has kind of a minor flare and then an abrupt engagement (I wouldn't describe it as violent) and then shifts for the rest of the day are perfect. I'm thinking it is just an odd quirk and a normal operating characteristic of this transmission.
