Losing the 4 legged family memebers is always the hardest. It's worse when they let you know it's time and you have to be the one to make the call.

5 years ago we had to have an old Siamese cat put down. He had been suffering bad kidneys for a while and we kept him around with IVs. But when we got up that morning, he let us know that it was his time.

Remember the good times. Know that you were a good pet parent.

When you embark on a journey with a new pet, remember that you're not replacing your old ones - just starting a new journey.

Certainly sorry to hear that.
I have been there, It has been 2 years since we had to put our 18 year old Siamese to sleep when her kidneys started failing.
Miss her every day. She is still on the wallpaper on my Iphone.
It is comforting to see her there every day.
We have two Siamese now, a seal and a lynx point. As Miller88 said above, new pets are a new journey. However, it is difficult to disengage from the relationship you had with the one you had.
Every day helps, but you still feel the loss. The most helpful tip someone gave me here was to have pictures of your pet around. It helps.

Very sorry to hear you lost your 4-legged friend. From one dog lover to another my most sincere and heartfelt sympathy.

Steve,

I've told the stories here before: Arizona, large red tabby, 16.5 years; Oreo, sweet little tuxedo cat, 11 years; Marie-Antoinette, smart black lady cat, 13 years; Tatiana R., clever tabby Siberian cat, only 3.5 years; and Angelique the crotchety Siberian, 11 years.

I have two more now, but I will never forget my old friends. Neither will you. Hang in there; it gets better.

Steve...I know exactly how you feel. It will be tough for a while emotionally dealing with the loss of your friend.

I had to take my buddy of twelve beautiful years to the vet four months ago. He had a weak heart at the end that was failing him. I still can't get his eyes looking at me those last moments out of my mind. Not that I really want to though....but it haunts me. He had always looked at me like that when he needed me. It was so awful putting him down. But I know I had no real choice and it had to be done.

Still, after four months, I miss him dearly. He honestly was my best buddy. He loved me and I loved him. We drove across the U.S. together three times. I remember just about every rest stop along the way and how he enjoyed seeing new place and smelling the air...just like I did. We were real pals.

We did get another puppy. It has not worked to help me get over losing him. I've really tried. Maybe because it's an entirely different bread? I don't know. My girlfriend loves the dog....but I have no feelings for it. I'm not mean to the dog. I just can't get attached to it. Maybe someday.

I ramble on...sorry. I don't really have any advice that hasn't already been said.

Time passing helps soften the pain. It will always hurt though. Not much you can do but move forward and reflect on how wonderful it was to have shared part of your life with such a good dog.

Take care.

Losing a member of the family is always tough and reminds me to enjoy the time we have with them as much as possible.

My most sincere thanks to all who responded. I know I am not alone in having to deal with these issues. And my heart goes out to all who are near the same decision.

Our vet was wonderful and came to my house to take care of us.

You guys have also been amazing, and I really appreciate it.

I will get another dog, Janet was an adoption and my Wife and I will visit our local shelters soon and try and save another good soul...

Thank you! There's too many loving animals in shelters who never get to experience a home.
