So sorry, Steve, there's no positive spin to put on losing a faithful dog. I've said goodbye to far too many great dogs over the years, and its going to destroy everyone in the family when our current lil' Cocker's time comes (he's about 11 years old now).
And Drew- our last dog before the current Cocker was a wonderful, bashful, wouldn't-hurt-a-fly 100-lb German Shepherd that scared the snot out of strangers just by wanting to lick their hands. When his time came, it was very much the same as yours, and he was about 14 or 15 years old.
But I wouldn't stop owning dogs for anything. They're God's own definition of "unconditional love" for all the rest of us to aspire to, and keep falling short of.
