A Fram oil filter leak found 2 days after mounting.

So long story short I couldn't find the Wix oil filters I usually use (sold out) so in a rush I just grabbed the next best thing to me a fram oil filter. 2 days since oil change and I walk outside and find a small puddle of oil on the ground where my truck parks. Looked under my truck and see a small bead of oil on the filter Thinking it was loose tried to tighten it more but couldn't. Anyways upon further inspection the filter has a hairline crack almost invisible on its head. I don't use wrenches to tighten only by hand. Maybe damaged at store? I don't know and I'm not saying fram is terrible because they do make some quality filters. I think it's just horrible luck. From now on though il use what I trust and that's the regular Wix filters. I didn't even think cracking was possible on a filter??

Unless there was a dent or some sort of damage at the crack, was probably a flaw when stretched/formed into the can shape. What kind of Fram was it? Reg orange, Tough Guard or Extra Guard? There was a guy 3-4 days ago that had a Wix filter leaking at the base plate seam. You never know. Anything made by man can mess up.
 
If you think you got a bad filter, contact the company who made it. If the company doesn't make it right then you have a right to vent in a public forum.

I don't currently use Fram filters but have in the past. No horse in this race.

It was the tough guard filter. Very true you never know and probably does happen with every oil filter company out there. It's just luck of the draw. Just glad I noticed it when I did probably could have been alot worse.

I honestly was so mad I just vented to the store I bought it from. Not because it was there fault just wanted to let them know what happened. They made things right though.

So true! I use Motorcraft filters on my Fords but there's always that little voice in the back of my head "this thing better not fail". Paranoia for sure but in my life I've seen 2 oil filter failures over the years. The worst happened when I was shooting the bull with a guy who was in his car parked with the engine running. His day old A/C Delco filter started pouring oil out the rolled seam. Never forgot that, haunts me to this day, if he'd been driving down the freeway he could have lost an engine.
Such are the vicissitudes of life. And owning a car....

I recently bought a tough guard cartridge filter from amazon and it arrived without the o ring. Contacted Fram and they rushed me a new complete filter. Their cust service is top notch.

The title of this thread should be changed...
Every product can have issues...

As evidenced by what others have stated about Wix.. I have had Purolator oil filter cause a very noticeable start up noise every time I started the vehicle.
 
Considering how many millions of Fram filters are in use, I'll chalk it up to "it happens." If the count starts rising and the company takes a stance like Purolator did with their filter issues, I'll change brands. For now I'll once again say "it happens."

+1 it can happen to them all.

I had a Purolator Classic leak at the base plate, and this was years before the tearing issue had surfaced. I used many other Classics during that time that had no issues, just happened to get a bad one. I would contact Fram and see if they can make it right.
 
I had a Wix once right out of the box have a missing gasket. Considering it came from behind the counter and was pristine, I assume it was shipped that way.

Mistakes happen.

Maybe some BITOG member was checking it out and dropped it on its head. then slipper her back in the carton.

Hard to see a crack through that thick grippy crackle paint.

Can you take a snapshot?

That's ridiculous that you took it out on them.... It should have been nothing more than saying, "hey, I just bought this filter yesterday and installed it today but it's got a hairline crack. Can I exchange it?".

And what's with all of the Fram apologists ? I use Fram myself but crap happens. Saying it happens to Wix, etc, etc just sounds petty.
 
I've had a Wix come from the factory with a small dent on the dome of the filter that was not from the packaging or shipment. I tried contacting them and they just told me not to use it, instead of offering to replace it. That said, I haven't had a defective Fram as of yet.
